1952 Chieftain flathead six water pump - what's wrong with this picture?

Here is a picture of my waterpump.  Seems to me that the spring clip is in the wrong place.  Any ideas?

Anybody got a look at theirs? Seems to me,(no disrespect Fitz), that it shoulsd somehow encircle the shaft?

I knew i should have taken a pic of my waterpump before putting the fan pully back on, the clip should be completly inside the notch so it clips the shaft. If the picture isnt looked at closely, it could be mistaken. The clip is fine but its just not seated correctly  :)

On later model the clip disappear, no need to lock the bearing.

Fitz, thanks for the help. I'll clean out the slot and try to seat it correctly. Maybe I can get an idea how it's supposed to be by looking at the '52 Fleetleader I will pick up on Wednesday, Yup, got the bug and got it bad...,

Actually the clip is in the correct position. I have seen the clip turned so it fits in the slot ( I believe from the water pump rebuilders did it this way) but they were like the pic from the factory.
So I suppose either way works.

Fitz, while not verbose, was absolutely correct. The 1952 Fleetleader parts car I picked up has exactly the same clip placement. Live and learn.
