68 sd tailpan trim and wheelopening,side trim mouldings.


The accents or highlighted (i.e)black on mouldings,tailpan,wheel opening mouldings and side mouldings.If a guy had a maroon SD would it have a cream,or off white accent,because the accent on this buuternut yellow car is black.Anyone have any experience on how the trim was depending on colour of car,or could you say at a dealer,Hey I like the yellow car but,but I want my mouldings to be like the ones on the maroon SD the off white.Make any sense?And also,these inner fender decals(motor oil)beaumont decals,Iv'e seen another version on it's placement,when looking in engine bay,to your left,the decal is read upside down,unlike all the others that insist that it is placed so to read it from top to bottom,also this decal isn't centred so perfectly,I think the manual for gm suggested how to place it,but guys just put them on how they liked it on some occsion,like I did with my 66,which is almost identically  located on an inner fender which appears to be unmolested as to where mine is.Go figure!

The stripe colour was assigned by the combination of exterior colour, top & interior colours. Black is the correct one for your car, and I think it looks best that way.

The oil change decal was placed in an imprecise way, it only needed to be there. There were subtle differences between the oil change decals for different years so if you are asked, make sure you get a 1968 version. Just because it was placed in a "good enough" position on the inner fender, doesn't mean you can't take your time and make it look professional. My Oshawa '67 Chevelle lost the decal long ago but the glue residue still shows exactly how it was placed in my car. I have the correct '67 oil change decal ready to go but it won't go on until I decide whether my inner fenders can be cleaned up adequately or if I am better to repaint them (40,000 original mile Ontario car).

Hi.  I don't come on this site very often as there appears to be no original cars being restored, and if there is, the characters that post time after time tend to attempt to discredit those that have original cars, even if theirs are literaly hot rods (jeolousy factor kicks in).  The original engine to the car seems to be the most important issue. This section of the forums is seldom used because there are so few original cars; most being wannabees, ie attempts at being clones with 454's or 427's only because the originals are too expensive for them to buy.  In any event the discussion herein in my case is original wheel well chrome.  I found my car for my brother in 1977-1978 and I purchased it from him in 1986.  He had the car repainted in about 1979 and he replaced the chrome with the GM stuff that was available at that time.  He found out I had been distracted from my body off restoration of my 68 427 Strato Chief and gave me a few pieces he had left over from when he had the paint done.  He gave me two pieces of what appears to be wheel well chrome about 5 or 6 inches long with the dog leg in them and he swears they were off of the car.  Well, I know he didn't even own another car even close to this so what are they?  The Chevelle guys I know have no idea; one of which has his original car from 1969; so what are they?  Here it comes from the other portions of the forum:  post a picture.  Well, I'm not good at that and I admit it.  I've done it a few times after much prompting but after many months or years you forget.  Lets just use our imagination and think about this piece thats identical to the wheel well chrome but its only 6" long, has a dog leg in it and would appear to be a lower section; maybe Beaumont only, who knows; how many real original cars are out there.  I didn't even know these existed until my brother gave them to me.  Is there a car as original as this where these two pieces of chrome exist?  I would really like to know.  Doug.

In spite of me being one of those "wannabees" who you love to take shots at Doug, I will ignore yet another dart and do my best to answer your question.

It's quite possible the moulding you are talking about is from a 66 full size B body Pontiac that was a no-fenderskirt car from new. I have seen a moulding like that on a few 66's years back.

I dug up an old photo of a 66 2+2 (US car, of course) that I parted out in the 80's and I think I see the piece you describe at the front of the rear wheel moulding, below the body line. Look at the picture and see what you think. It's hard to see but I think it's there.

 I guess the reason guys pull high dollars for some cars is because they are correct,there you go.Cheetah should know this info,he has one or two of these cars.The ones I have are one piece.I never knew they were 2 piece.

I'm very sorry Carl; my comments are never intended to be personal.  Anyway, some here seem to have much more information about these then I could possibly know.  It seems that they may just have well been a two piece chrome.  I was over at the body shop tonight where the car is being painted and he had another thought.  He wondered if when the car was being painted back in the 70's that they could have possibly cut the lower portion of a one piece set off just to line up the body lines as they knew they were replacing them with new ones.  They didn't look like they had been cut off but I will have to check them the next time I'm up to Belmont where I keep the parts.  Again, I must apologize for my inconsiderate wording in past posts.  Often times wording comes out in print more aggresive and controversial then it was meant to be, hence causing bad feelings.  I can't say much more than that.  Doug.

You would have thought I would have checked my parts book long before this.  SD 396 is abosolutely correct; page 10, item 30, part nos. 725357-lower right and 752356 lower left, both shown on schematic on page. 9.  The schematic for the 69 wheel well chrome on page 5 for the 1969 Moulding Chart clearly shows the wheel well chrome does not come down to the bottom the way 68's do and all Chevelles, ie it comes down to the stripe that travels laterally up and down the car, starting at the front and rear of the front fender well.  According to the schematic you would have to cut a full reproduction wheel well chrome at these two points to be correct for 1969.  For 1968 I would have to cut the one piece wheel well chrome at the dog leg on the rear of the front fender and slide these underneath the upper section.  There is a facility on these two pieces for them to fit that way ie to slide them under the upper section of the chrome.  Mine are fairly pitted and corroded.  Next time I go up to Belmont I'll pick them up and see if I can salvage them.  I just had some seat chrome for a 427 Fairlane polished for a friend of mine and the shop said they couldn't replace the coating that protects the polish, which I assume is a type of anodizing for polished aluminum.  They did however polish the aluminum up to the point it looked like new.  We do have a large polisher so I may try it myself; nothing to lose I suppose.  If they do polish up I'll cut my one piece and install the correct lower pieces.

I just noticed from the schematic of the 68 wheel well chrome on page 9 that it stops at the same point as 69 at the front, probably where the top of the bumper meets that point.  I never really noticed; are Chevelles that way as well?  My wheel well chrome is with the car at the paint shop so I can't check it tonight to see if it goes all the way to the bottom on the front.

Here is a pic of a 69 chevelle NOS one from ebay. Looks like chevelle go all the way around the wheel opening . The 69 Beaumont sales brochure also shows the wheel molding going around the whole wheel opening. But thats  just a sales brochure,  not always reliable.
