Why does the 1968 catalina gas gauge read 1/4 tank.

If the gauge does this without being hooked up it must be defective.

I remove the gauge from the dash and moved the niddle to E and in about a hour it went back to 1/4 tank mark by itself. For years it always bothered me that I coundn't trust it.

When mine reads 1/4 tank I have only put in $80.00 of premium Sunoco.
