Sorry its a Ford... Barn Find... Time Capsule

I figured I would share this gem. Its not a GM but anyone who appreciates cars should see this beauty.

Its a 1981 Mercury Grand marquis LS. It was purchased in Mississauga Ontario and lived its whole life there. The man who purchased this car new babied it. Never winter drove it and could count on one hand the number of times the car saw rain. Sadly he passed away and the car was tucked away. I stumbled across it as having one in the family growing up. This car currently has 54,000 original kms on it.

This picture was taken last summer with a cleaning. I have not yest waxed this car.

Other than oil and filters this car has only had spark plugs, wires, cap & rotor, a battery and I had to replace the four original tires so certify not due to tread but age.

The car drives like a dream and everything works from the varible venturi carb to the R-12 A/C

It could either be the 302 (5.0 L) or a 351 (5.8 L).  I don't think they were putting the 255 (4.2 L) in those big cars, but I could be wrong. Pretty decent cars with a full frame. The drawback on those cars, first and formost, would have to be the Variable Venturi carburator. Also there were some issues with Cruise-A-Matics in general jumping out of park, but a recall was issued.

I remember riding in a new 1985 version of that car with my then future wife, with her employer on the way to a Christmas party at the employer's house in Brantford.

I'll bet it's a nice and comfy cruiser. It is doubtful that one of those would ever be restored, so the best bet in seeing how they were new is with your car. I hope it continues to get babied by you! Drive it, maintain it, and always insist on getting original parts back after anything is done. Oh, and black paint is tough to keep looking good. May I suggest Liquid Glass as a good thing to try. I use it on my black daily driver.

Very, very nice! I can really appreciate that car for what it is. Good score! My father had a 79 Medium metallic blue Marquis with a 351. HD suspension. The car was pretty quick for it's time, and compared to his previous generation 77, handled like it was on rails with the new Firestone 721's. Felt far more "modern". I remember really feeling like I was in a solid and well designed car when our family rode in that one down to Florida.

If you're willing to work on it just a little underneath, the absolute best bang for the buck to imrove the way that car drives, would be to simply add a standard size rear stabilizer bar. Also make sure the front bar links are not rotten or crushed with age, if so replace them. I know it's just a cruiser and you probably like it just as is, but it will make it safer, and even more fun to drive than it already is. This is a bodystyle really responds to cheap and simple suspension tweaks.

Have fun.

it is a 302. i thought about some simple upgrades but you could eat off the underside of this car. It has never been rust proofed and has never rusted??? proof that the story is right on the car hardly seening rain and never seeing an ontario winter. I put historic plates on the car and have driven it very little. It has not seen rain on my watch yet either.

I purchased a wagon 6 years prior to this one as a nice cruiser and an entry level car for the local cruise nights for me. Ill dig up some pics of the wagon and post them but the two cars turned out to have been built on the same day same black one red cars.
