My '69 SD-396

With proding from Carl Stevenson I finaly dipped into my  vaults and came up with the bill of sale, August 4th 1970 from Kirkpatrick Pontiac Buick in Vancouver.

Final price was $2,975.68 and I had a year of GMAC financing to make up the difference from the cash, 12 payments of $39.64 at 19.72% intrest (yeeee gods !! in 1970 !!!)

Next is to get the registration from the car (it's locked up in my sons garage for the winter, longest time it's been out of my sight in the 43 years) we'll check the reg v/s the bill of sale on the VIN and against the car itself before going for that herritage certificate from the General.

biggrin

PART 2..
Dug deeper in the mess, , knew I had the original bill of sale from Ken Taylor Motors in Revelstoke somewhere (why the---do ((DID))I have 20 years of old timeslips saved ?)
Car was sold to Mike Jakobson of Nacusp June 25th 1969. Full price was $4,669.10, less $1,694.10 for his trade, a 1965 International pickup.
Final price, $3,141.63..Mike traded it a year later for a '70 GTO convertable.
The accesories list is all numbers, no explanation although after I bought it I did sit down with a family friend who was the sales manager at Capitol motors in Vernon and..give me a break, it was almost 43 years ago, he did ident them, but we didn't write them down.

experts ?
M40 B57, A02 U57 , 225 , D33, U14, V63, W40, 2K3, Z19, TTP, B93, WC8, AND 099.
I know 325 hp 395, 12 bolt, turbo 400, AM radio, Floor mount 8 track (still there n' still works) The extra courtesey lights and side marker lights, (side markers were required by law but they worked that in as an extra anyway)..
etc etc..

Thanks guys, managed to add from Darryl's list.. ZK3 Delux seatbelts and front shoulder harness,
U63 Base AM radio
Z25 S/S option, wonder if that was just the stripes or also the H/D suspension.
D-99 two tone paint mouldings..that I guess would be the chrome between the black painted roof and the garnet red body..y'kow the ones that make people as again and again "so did it come with a vynyl roof ?"
O.K. wait for Chris to show, he's grabbing the reggie and double checking with the car's tags to make as sure as possible all numbers match the documents.
The Ken Taylor bill is much easier to read on the VIN that what the grumpy old fart, oops, he's probably dead now, sales guy, wrote at Kirkpatrick..

If it came with a vynal roof it would show as option C08. If it just shows D99 it would only be the trim.

That's the cool part, he still does and bought it when it was only a year old! As close to original owner as you can get!

You got to show some pics of this car. Does it still have the original air cleaner on it with the astro jet decal ?  That 69 beaumont air cleaner decal was unique to the 69 only and have only seen a GM black and white pics of it.

At this point I only have my avitar pic in digital format, and the car's in my son's garage for it's 1st winter away from home.
When I got the car it had no decal on the air cleaner, just a plain chrome top, the air cleaner itself disapeared many years back, along with the grill and trunk deck crests.
It is a driver, not a trailer queen. With junior back from Ft Mac this week may be able to get some shots. There were some posted this summer by another Vernon Poncho member, stuff he shot with his cell camera in the pits at Thunder Mountain Raceway, Saw them then, but no idea where to find them on the site now ?

Here you go. This is one rare car. It is beleived that only 91 SD cars built in 69. 48 325 HP cars and 43 350 HP cars. When you get your GM documents this will confirm the figures.

The signs on the car in the "action" shot are magnetic in case anyone was apalled
Question, I see no reference to 4 speeds in these cars, anyone know if they were available or sold ?

Yes, 4 speed was available. One thing though, our member here 68sd396rag told me yesterday that all 69 SD cars are bench seat (if I understood him right)

That's pretty interesting/unusual.

The theory I have as to why the SD-396 was available only on the base 734-series models with bench seat & rubber floor mats is because the GTO was now being sold in Canada for 1969. Remember the GTX vs. Road Runner? The SD-396 in 1969 was Pontiac Canadas equivalent of the Road Runner. If you wanted the prestige musclecar you bought a GTO instead; the GTO already had a boatload of image. I knew of 2 1969 GTOs sold new in my area when I was growing up. Gearheads loved them but doctors actually could afford to buy and insure them.

There were GTOs sold new in Canada prior to 1969, but it would have been an expensive proposition with all the tariffs. I knew of a 65 GTO & a few 67 GTOs that were sold new in Canada, including a 67 GTO sold new out of Gus Brown in Whitby Ontario. Ive not heard of any 66 or 68 models sold new in Canada. There was also a U.S. 67 Chevelle SS396 with a rare L78 sold new in the Maritimes. True, the old Auto Pact of 1965 was ratified in 1965 but the 66 models were either months away or already being tooled up for. There was a certain phasing in period, plus production planning was involved, so that really the fruits of the Auto Pact werent really felt until the 1969 model year. Starting with the 69 models, things like body-coloured firewalls & trunks gave way to the American way of doing it, and numerous Canadian-built cars were shipped to the U.S. just as U.S.-built cars came up north.

So to summarize, plain SD-396 with bench seat & rubber mat = Road Runner; GTO with buckets & lots of image with a higher price tag = GTX (actually a cooler image than a GTX).

Think of the continuation of the Beaumont SD-396 as the Tempest GT-37 for 1970-71, but the engine choices started with an easy to insure 350 2-barrel (insurance became an overriding issue that lead to declining sales of high performance cars and drivetrains). The GT-37 was available as a 2-door post coupe or a hardtop coupe, came only with plain bench seats & rubber floor covering.

Regarding the comment I made about Doctors buying GTOs, both the 1969 GTOs in town belonged to doctors when I was growing up. Attached is a picture of a 1969 GTO convertible sold new out of Douglas Pontiac-Buick-Cadillac in Hamilton to a Dr. Ian Malcolm, a family friend. This picture is from around 2001-2003. This picture is what promped my friend and I to check it out when offered for sale in 2003 by the retired original owner. At $18,000 we felt there was far too much hidden rust. If Dr. Malcolm is still alive he must be approaching 90.

I didn't mean to hijack this thread.

Like Carl said 4 speed was an option. The heavy duty three speed was the base trany with the Z25 option. Here is the power team list for you.
