I don't even want to consider how long it would take to roll that up to highway speed.

That 230 would have no trouble getting up to highway speed if you are talking about 100 km/h. They have surprisingly good bottom end torque and will effortlessly keep up with traffic. Now once you want to go north of 120 km/h, well the 1-barrel carb & 6-into-1 exhaust will make their restrictions known.

Ditto, we had a brand new 66 Malibu wagon, 230, 3 speed bolt action. Yawn.......!!!

Sorry, I just can't get into 6 cylinder mode no matter how hard I try when I hear many of you singing praises of them. Old dog, new trick I guess.

Had a 65 Impala SS with a 230 auto. It was no pavement pounder but I did enjoy the styling. It served me well as a young guy going to university.

I wish I had a big block putting out 800 horses but I am too damn cheap to put in that much gas to drive all the places I want to go.  For the years I have been on this forum I haven't read of some of you guys with your wee 8s driving a hundred miles. I have met a couple of exceptions from Alberta.  I love driving them as much as I like wrenching on them.  I probably have more fun on the road than in the garage but I do enjoy the garage too.

I'm itching for the day I can finally put some miles on something V8 powered again Jerel. I mean, REAL V8, not these sissy daily driver Vortecs and Lt1's I drive now! Yes, I know the new ones are more fuel efficient, make as much power etc but there's just something about a 60's V8, especially a big block with a Muncie behind it. I can't explain it but it started when I bought my first Acadian in 1974 when I was 16. It was a 6 cylinder and I had no choice but to rip the 6 out and V8 it within months of buying it.

I know lots of you guys drive them and love them. And I'm glad you do, because I still love looking at them in the shows, or seeing them on the road.

My dad lived to be 62 and never owned a V8 his whole life! Maybe that's what did it for me, I don't know...

And trying to stay on topic (something else that I struggle with!), any 64 Pontiac, moredoor or not, 6 cylinder or not that actually hasn't seen winter has got to be a cool, rare find.

Jerel,

I drove my 327 powered Parisienne from Winnipeg to Edmonton... and got pretty much similar mileage as my wife's 2011 V6 Sante Fe...doing 85mph most of the way here..The only issue I had was trying to find premium fuel in small town Saskatchewan!!

The only thing that would hold me back on this one, other than not having the cash is the fact that it is a more door..if it was a 2 door...or a wagon (I know it makes no sense) and I had the cash..I'd probably be making the call....

Nice car, but having a moredoor with a V8, i don't think i'd want a six. And so far this year i've put 1000 miles on her.

I don't even mind the inline 6, but the PowerGlide, naaaa. A 3 on the tree is bearable in these old girls. Can't drive them very fast anyways as they were very fond of skidding into the ditch on winding roads. I know from way too much experience!

In my eyes there is huge cache in finding and owning one of these original untouched survivors regardless of engine. This car represents the pinnacle of Canadian Pontiac sales and represents what the average Canadian was driving and buying in 1964. Our own family traded in a 261 61 Strato Chief on a 65 230 Laurentian. Neither car ever struck me as a boy as being inept. As far as owning a classic goes how often are these cars driven anyway. I have a huge horsepower massive torque car that has been driven 4 times so far this year, basically a lawn ornament.

so very true - its about the nostagia - I love power houses too - but really just cruising around in the character of the old classic is what does it for me

That's exactly the way I think.

So far, I just like looking at my car in the car shed, with the occasional start-up and roll-out.

It is being worked on veeeeery slooooowly.smile

The '60 Chev Bel Air that I once owned had an old truck motor (261?) in it that was blowing by like crazy, backed by a worn out 3 speed manual trans.  While not a rocket, that car with a worn out six had no trouble climbing the steepest of hills in my city and had no trouble keeping up with modern traffic.  Mind you with the zillion-turn-lock-to-lock steering and three on the tree, it kept you busy driving around town, but was never for want of power for regular driving.  The trans linkage that seemed to bind up at the least-opportune moments was much more of an issue.

That said, I've never driven a full size with a six and a powerglide, so that combination might be more lethargic.
