1957 Steering play adjustment??

Hi guys,

I recently restored all the front end on my Laurentian and had the alignment done, however I still have a lot of play/loose in the steering wheel.

Imagine the branch of the steering wheel like the arms of a clock set a 21:15 when I drive in a straight line, and I can bring the steering branches to 20:10 or 22:20 and still continue in a straight line...(I hope my explanation is clear enough blankstare

I checked in the manual and I know there is an adjustment on the steering box to fix this but I don't have the special tools to do it.

Is there a quick and easy method to correct this?

Thanks a lot

Steve

You can tighten the steering box on the top of the box. There is nut you slack off and a flat screw you tighten. There is usually 3 to 4 full threads visible. If there are no threads visible there is no adjustment left. Go a 1/2 turn at a time. If you go to tight the steering wheel will not come back when you turn a corner.

Al, of course, is right ... no special tools reaquired, just a wrench and a screwdriver, might need to let some penetrating oil soak on it all before starting.

Yup, ran into that on my '55, don't force it

Thanks Al,

I'll give it a try.. I'm not worried about it being jammed as the sterring box is rebuilt also, so it should turn easily.

I'll let you know how it turned out.

Thanks!

Finally, Fitz came to my house and helped me fix many small issues with the front end.

The car drives way better now, but I will still need to get new tires to make it a smooth ride.

Thanks a lot Fitz!
