NO, N.A.S.A. type hood was not standard on these cars. In fact I once read that no 1973 Grand Ams were equipped with the hood at all, although I find that hard to believe, I can't recall seeing one in person with the scooped hood. MY Boss had one, brand new back then and it was more luxury than muscle car so it had a smooth hood.

A functional ram-air induction system was developed for the Pontiac A-bodies utilizing twin NACA openings in the hood, but the option was dropped due to inability to pass federally mandated drive-by noise standards.

A few functional Ram Air systems were sold over the counter.

The twin-scoop NACA hood was an option for any Pontiac A-body for all three years, but was non-functional.

Rat Boy - you had a post elsewhere on here about brochure accuracy. Things appearing in brochures but not being available. Is this another example?

I was second owner of this 455 car with a smooth hood. I can't even recall, is this a 73 or 74?

No, mine ended up at Hildebrand Auto Wrecking in Altona after someone scavenged the 455 out of it.

I finally found my pics of the 73 gran prix.  At one time my friend wanted 500 buc  for it . I believe the

floors are rotten. Those hardtop  windows don't seal so good. Pics are from 2008 . I think it has a 400.

Enjoy

I found the answers kind of confusing in this topic so here's an overall answer:

"Did the 1973 GA come with a NACA hood?"

Yes. It was not standard equipment, but was a regular production option from 1973 through 1975. There are '73 GA's from the factory that have the scooped hood. My neighbor had a brand new one with the scooped hood when I was growing up.

There was a Ram Air setup that used the scooped hood that was intended for production in 1973, I think as part of the intended SD455 package. A few preproduction units were built. The Ram Air option made the brochure (and so did the SD455), but the Ram Air setup was cancelled at the last minute and it was never released as a production option. Any Ram Air 73 Grand Ams are based on a collection of parts smuggled out of GM, and some parts bought over the counter. There are only two or three such cars but they're out there on the Internet...  http://www.pontiacpower.org/1973ramair.htm

Hope this helps make it a bit more clear.

AS usual we are all saying the same thing in  a different way. The Real question was however would the car for sale for $300 have a scooped hood.

Answer is Maybe.

OK, SO OPTIONAL, NOT STANDARD. I THOUGHT I HAD READ OR HEARD THAT THEY ONLY CAME ON THE GTO IN '73. WHEN I GOOGLED IT, I DID NOT FIND A CLEAR ANSWER. I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THEY WOULD BE STANDARD ON THESE DUE TO THE RACEY STYLING OF THE FRONT END.

ALWAYS LEARNING SOMETHING ON HERE!biggrin

this is in my yard .the pics are old 2008 . I guess I should call my friend to see if he

has any love for it after 20 years. Years ago he wanted 500 $  If it was the last one on the

planet you might fix it. we drove it here.

Its not on kijiji.

To simplify and for clarity the hood was standard equipment twice as follows:

1973 GTO

1975 GT

Optional otherwise.
