Wiring Problem need confirmation

Solid core wire in a vehicle is not normal, as the solid core is prone to breakage due to vibration. My thinking is the only woven cloth cover wire should be from the firewall connector to the coil. It's actually a resistive wire that drops the voltage to the coil, taking the place of the old ballast resistors. However, even though the resistive wire has a woven cloth cover, it has a stranded core.

Just checked my wiring and I marked every wire when I took them off. That is the ballast wire that goes to the positive side if the coil . If it has not been cut it should have a yellow wire attached to the other end that went to the R terminal on the starter solenoid. It is on the schematic shows as white/orange/purple for v8 and white/red/black for six engine. When it was new the wire is all white with orange and purple dashes on the wire if v8 but the dash colours seem to fade over time.

Yes, exactly, woven cover, solid core, positive side of the coil, should show 9 volts with the key "on". The wire from the solenoid also goes to the coil and feeds 12 volts to the coil during "crank" only.

Thanks guys, I do believe you are right, the white wire in question is a coil wire. That just leaves me trying to locate the temperature sending unit wire.

Yes, dark green for temp should be correct. It should be part of the engine harness, likely coming across the firewall and then heading down the left side of the engine, and if it's still original, wrapped up in a sort of cloth covering (assuming it's done as the same as the 6-67 era.)

Have you checked right back at the firewall plug for a green wire coming out of the connector at the firewall?

Oh, and to answer your other question, on the original engine I believe the temp sending unit would have been in the drivers's side head, likely between the front two spark plugs if I remember right.

This is correct............see attached, this is 350 SBC in 69 Beaumont ( not original however)

Thanks Carl, I will be checking the other wiring harness that runs across the drivers fender. The harness is intact but I suspect someone may have cut the wire at the tape. I will find it I am sure as everything else is there. I am planning on running both gauges and the idiot lights if I can get everything working correctly. So I get a visual warning if something is going wrong.

I see in Les's picture of his mechanical gauge that it runs across the inner fender to the head. I could be wrong but I think the wire for the OEM lite doesn't take that same path.

Stock wire runs down the top side of the valve cover along the intake manifold and around the front of the valve cover back to the sending unit, doesn't it? My memory is fading.

Good news,... I located the wire for the sending unit, it was cut off clean where it exited the harness running along the fender. I've got them all now, thanks guys.
