Is that a V-8 or the slant 4 inliner? Sounds like a sweet deal on a sweet car.

Brian is correct, they cut the left bank off a 389 V8 & made it a 4 banger This also has the trans. at the back of car & what they called the "rope" d/shaft, a thick wire cable, with U/joints at the end!!! It worked!!!!!!

I'd be looking for the other half of that 389.

Gotcha, thanks. The 4cyls I'm use to are the inline ones like in Nova, look like a inline 6 but a couple cylinders missing. Another thing that threw me is the air breather looks early 283. Right on.

The other half is in another Tempest.

Those special inline Pontiac fours made great power. Of course being half a 389 does not hurt. Mickey Thompson made one of those Pontiac fours fly on the drag strip, with a blower in one of his dragsters. Mickey was heavily involved with Pontiac engines and cars then. I would have to wonder just how reliable those "rope" drive shafts were. That same setup also has the torque converter at the back ahead of the differential, not behind the engine.Leave it to Pontiac and their great engineers to come up with some of this amazing stuff, as well as a ton of other great idea's over the years.
