Selling/shipping parts to Overseas

I am in the process of selling a Hood ornament from my scrapped 86 GMC Wrangler pickup to person in Norway! Apparently he has restored the truck and has been searching for over a year for one. His girl friend found my add on line and contacted me to by it for him as a surprise. What's the best way to ship the item and receive payment so that both parties are assured satisfaction? Snail mail with Canada post is $7.75 and 4-6wks to get there. I have to find out if duty or tax will be applied at the other end. Any help/advice appreciated. Thanks.

I shipped parts to Iceland my mail and it was very simple. I just had to fill out a Customs form with declared value for when it gets to his end. It was slow like you say but worked out fine. The Icelander had to pay some duty but it's less for antique. In this case it was for a 65 Nova. I'm not sure how old they call antique there but 86 must be close to it!

I used Paypal for payment, that works best of all I'd say.

Thanks Carl. Paypal seems a bit complicated to set up? Too much info divulged to the Gov't? I don't normally by or sell over the net. I suggested a money order or bank draft. We're talking a whole $35 bucks plus shipping here. LOL.

A money order for that amount will cost him dear. Consider asking him to do it the old fashioned way. Dollar notes (Canadian or U.S. as you wish), wrapped in a sheet of printer paper, posted to you in an envelope. That way nobody else gets a cut and there's only a tiny risk it goes missing. We're not talking mega money here after all!

x2 ... I've done it a thousand times prior to PayPal ... but ask for U.S. funds (easier to get in Norway).

Snail mail is the way to go.

When I was selling stuff on ebay about a dozen years ago I sold a 57 Chevy clock to a fellow in Norway.  He sent me US funds in the mail, and I sent him the part via Canada Post.  Believe it or not, it was only about a week each way.

When I shipped to Iceland it was much slower than that, a bit over a month.

Yes, for sure use Canada Post cheapest rate. The $7.50 is pretty fair. If people don't have PayPal, I usually get them to find someone they know and use theirs.
If your buyer has it, maybe you have a friend with PayPal who can receive the loot for you, and pay you. There's always a bit of a fee, though. Couple bucks, maybe.
Cash usually works, although I have had cash disappear in the mail, but usually only around Christmas time. Guess the labour pool is flooded with temp workers at that time, who aren't concerned about their futures. Numerous others I know of also lost cash or jewelry from the mail, but once again, only at Christmas.
Very little to fill out at Canada Post for overseas. Not like FedEx, with two forms, shipping and customs.

A friends pay pal sounds like a plan. The purchaser has stated that it is illegal to send cash in the mail in Norway. They suggested pay pal or for me to give them a bank acct #[ NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!] I'm going to mail the part regardless, and work out the payment in the mean time.

Canada Post's rules have changed re sending international items.  It's cheaper if you prepare the shipment online with all the info.  It'll cost you more if you arrive at the post office and have them do it.

Regarding payment from Norway, as the buyer is hesitant to send cash, and you're hesitant to provide banking info to him or to paypal, I'd say the only option is for the buyer to send a money order.
