Conroy Pontiac Dealership Photos


Hi everyone. I'm a new member of group. I'm working on a story on one of the 427-powered 1967 Beaumonts that was was modified by Conroy Pontiac of West Vancouver, B.C. and I am looking for any archival materials from the dealership. This would include photos of the dealership (black and white or color), in-period newspaper ads, photos of any competition cars from the dealership and dealership post cards and promotional materials.

If you have any materials that you think I could use in the preparation of my story, can you scan them and E-mail them to me? My E-mail address is richtruesdell at gmail dot com.

Many of you are probably familiar with the car. It belongs to George Pappas.

I want for this feature to be the definitive story on these very special cars and I am assembling as much historical material as possible, going far beyond what is currently available. Getting some dealership photos will go a long way to making this happen.

I'm friends with George and this is a great idea you have going , I got a nice pic of his car in front of In & Out burger near Bakersfield CA while we were both down for the Hot Rod reunion last Oct together. Hi Richard here is the other 2 adds I have from Conroy Motors that were in local motorsport mags from back then , I too have also yet to see one with a picture of the dealership unfortunately.

Why does George's car look light in the front end? (sags over the rear wheels) I've never seen red stripes before... I'm assuming it's a Cheetah thing only?

Can't think of too many other models of cars adorned with as many factory/dealer equipped/ badges and stickers. Kewl.

Hey Kyle that pic was from last Oct when he drove it down to California to the Hot Rod reunion where we met up. The rear sag would have been from all his stuff he brought down for the road trip as he was down there for a few weeks.

Well, isn't that interesting.

I've learned most of what I know about Cheetahs on here, seen there are documented 66 and 67 Cheetahs but a 69 Cheetah?

Have I been living under a rock or have the rest of you guys never heard of this car before? Or is it just a race car named Cheetah and it has nothing to do with Conroy?

I want to thank every one who contributed here. I turned in all my materials last Friday to the editor (can't say the magazine right now) and the issue is in production right now. As soon as I have a on-sale date I will share it with the group but given the time involved in magazine production, it will be about 45 days. It is my understanding that it will have a June cover date.

I believe that the story will clear up whether or not there were any 1969 Cheetahs.

I was very surprised that not one photograph of the dealership facility turned up, not a photo or promotional post card. It's almost as if the dealership never existed. You would have though something would have survived.

I would like to ask an unrelated question. I am part of an independent publishing company and we produce a niche magazine called Legendary Cougar Magazine (LCM). We have developed a business model that allows us to build print/digital magazines that addresses what we call underserved markets. When High Performance Pontiac (HPP) ceased publication last year (and Pontiac Enthusiast (PE) in 2010 which I contributed to) I talked with several Pontiac enthusiasts about launching a new, reader-supported Pontiac-focused magazine (LCM has only one and a half pages of advertising so it's virtually all editorial content). Nothing ever came of the discussions at the time but as we are looking at a follow up title to LCM, I thought I would ask the members here what they think of the idea so I can bring the subject up at our next planning meeting.

The question is this. Should a new Pontiac magazine be one that covers Pontiacs of all eras and all types, like HPP or PE or should it concentrate on a specific subset of Pontiacs like Firebirds or GTOs or just Pontiac muscle cars?

We launched LCM simply with the support of the online Cougar community, basically in the forums like this one. Our original launch goal was 200 subscribers, and we launched with 300 a year ago and now, as we are preparing issue six (LCM is a bi-monthly, 48-page magazine) we have 500 subscribers. We will not start publishing a second year unless we have 500 subscribers. LCM is not cheap ($24/year for digital, $60/year for print) because there's basically no advertising. For every two pages of advertising we get, with our business model we can add two pages of editorial content (magazines must add four pages at a time). The high print cost also reflects that we are printing LCM using print-on-demand technology, meaning we only print as many issues as we have subscribers; there's no waste. In spite of the high cost, we have twice as many print subscribers (who get the digital version for free) as we do digital subscribers. it seems that readers who want to read enthusiast magazines want the dead tree (ink-on-paper) edition rather than reading it on the computer or tablet. (I don't believe that anyone wants to read this kind of content on a smartphone; it's simply not an involving presentation.)

What kind of all-Pontiac magazine would you, as Pontiac enthusiasts, like to see? And not only will you support such a magazine by buying it, but with supporting it with the well-written and researched stories with great photography that any magazine needs to survive and grow? And is it possible to start out with a much larger reader base? If starting out with 1,000 print subscribers, it would be possible to print on a conventional press which would mean a larger package (number of pages) at the same cost.

I will be curious to get your feedback and ideas. If there's positive feedback I'll take things to the next level.

And once again, thanks for all your help in preparing the story on George's 1967 Beaumont Cheetah. I think you'll all be pleased with the way it turned out.

A link to Canadian Poncho would be nice to see in the article. As far as content I don't think I've seen any recent magazine cover a Canadian built full sized Pontiac. They deserve some recognition.

There was a Pontiac magazine out before, not sure if its still around, was called Pontiac magazine? pontiac enthusiest?, had new and old pontiacs. the pontiac header on magazine lookedlike looked like old fender script slanted.

That was Pontiac Enthusiast. It started off as an excellent magazine, somewhat unique in how it was done and amazingly fresh. It didn't have the mainstream car magazine feel to it at all. However, it was eventually sold and almost immediately converted to just another car magazine and it's been gone for a few years now.

I think it would be tough to find enough "new" material to start a Pontiac magazine but I would certainly support one that wasn't the same old stuff I've seen over the years. PE had a way of finding Pontiac stuff that was new to the community.

Carl, the economics of the magazine business is challenging to say the least. What my business partner and I have proved is that there's a business model for very targeted, very focused magazines. If you told me a year ago that there would be an audience of 500 people willing to pay $60 a year for a magazine focusing on classic 1967 to 1973 Mercury Cougars, I would have told you that you were crazy. But it worked. The business model had us in the black from the first day of publication.

The question now is if there's a larger niche, say at least 1,000 paying subscribers, that would support some sort of Pontiac-focused publication. And if so, should it be an all encompassing publication, like Pontiac Enthusiast, or one that targets a more narrow slice of the Pontiac community? I'm beginning to think that a Pontiac muscle car magazine might be the best way to go. It would primarily feature Firebirds and GTOs but one of the three stories in each issue would focus on an alternative high-performance Pontiac like a Grand Prix, a Catalina 2+2 or even a Beaumont. 

Here's a link to a story that I wrote for Pontiac Enthusiast's sister title, Musclecar Enthusiast, on another high-performance Beaumont.

I don't think getting fresh content will be an issue. That would be my job as editor to make sure the content is fresh. Actually, I would love to find someone really steeped in Pontiac history to serve as editor as I have my hands pretty fully right now. Then I could help that person craft the kind of magazine that would fit into the business model we've developed for Legendary Cougar Magazine (LCM), one that my business partner has proven will work. Here's a link to a preview of the current issue of LCM. Try to imagine a similarly formatted magazine on Pontiacs. I think that many of the threads on a board like this would provide inspiration for all kinds of feature articles, especially on the tech side. While personally I'm not in favor of tech stories in a magazine, thinking that's better handled online, readers have told me otherwise and if I've learned anything being an editor, it's to listen to the readers.

And there's the issue that older readers are much more comfortable with a traditional magazine than they are with a digital presentation. They want to hold something tangible in their hands. That's what print does so much better than digital. And lets face it, the demographics for Pontiac enthusiasts skews older than it would for most other car enthusiast communities. And right now, it's underserved with the demise of High Performance Pontiac and Pontiac Enthusiast.

You need Ray as editor. Magazines dont have readership as they use to have, everything in a magazine can be found online, even the magazine itself. Many newspapers, magazines and even encyclopedias have gone by the wayside. If you're going to make a Pontiac magazine, it should contain all Pontiacs not just high performance, besides, there's already a magazine called high performance. Magazines are something I have never subscribed too, except old autos, I just look at them while wife shops and will only buy them if they contain information surrounding my type of cars, no sense subscribing to any magazine that a guy only gets the odd worthwhile writeup. It's been a very long time since I've bought a magazine, especially when most are approaching ten bucks a copy.

High Performance Pontiac magazine died in May of 2014, certainly a sign of the times.

Not to be a pessimist but it had a big following and yet still didn't survive.

I have a number of ideas as to why it died but regardless of what I think went wrong, apparently it was not a money maker or it would be around.

With that said, I'd love to read Pontiac stuff each month in a new magazine. I could spend my money on a lot worse things!

Carl, maybe you would like to help out setting the editorial agenda of a proposed Pontiac magazine.

For most magazines, it's about advertising. Do you want a magazine that is 25-40% advertising in exchange for a $5 price or do you want a magazine with less than 5% advertising in exchange for a highly focused editorial package aimed at readers?

In a nutshell, that's the choice.
