door panel board

hey all

well time to get back at the 49 project,One of the things I still have to buy are the replacement door panels. Now chevs of the forties make the backer boards for the 49 styleline which should be the same as my 49 special 6 sedan. Not terribly expensive but of course they are oversize and cost a fortune to ship.So got to thinking exactly what are the backer boards made of?thick cardboard or panel board and could a guy not find something at the local rona that would do the job?Anyone ever made their own?I have the old panels for patterns and I can get the fabric from sms autofabrics if need be.Any help appreciated.
