Digging up an old thread here... I was looking at the 283 I pulled out of my '66 Impala, and I noticed that my engine code is also a nine-digit code with no letters. It matches the engine number provided on my VVS documents, and the casting number is right for the application. There is an "M" cast into the block as well, which I assume is for McKinnon. There's no real mystery here about what the motor is or whether it is original, but I'm still wondering if anyone knows why some blocks got what seems more like a serial number than a code? Is there any significance to the numbers?
Canadian Mckinnion blocks in canadian built cars seemed to always use this nine digit number system, at least with respect to chev and pont, beaumont etc. I am speaking of early 60's thru mid 60's anyway.
