Just bumping this up, although I can't offer much help.
I was always under the impression that the small block balancer faces where the same distance, regardless of diameter. I'm sure I've seen guys put the old style brackets on the big balancers. And come to think of it, a 65 Beaumont L79 would have had an 8" balancer I believe.
I can't help with the ps bracket question at all, sorry.

The top power steering bracket uses the same bolts and mounts over the base of the alternator bracket, on the exhaust manifold.
The pulley mounting face of the balancer on my 283 is about 2 1/8" front the front surface of the timing cover, and like Carl says the hi-performance 327 used a larger balancer with all the same pulleys. I have a 70 truck 350 short water pump and pulley and these are the same depth as my 283 pump and pulley, and that 350 had an 8" balancer, so I would say if you have the correct '65 brackets and exhaust manifolds it shouldn't be a problem.
