Ready to take to the engine dyno shop - DROPPED IT OFF TODAY

151124.jpg

Finally got the plug wires made up (the boots did NOT want to go on without a fight - I don't remember having problems like that with the race car - but this set, no matter how much silicone spray I used, they were very hard to get pushed onto the wires) - the headers were on just for fitment and routing and will come off before taking the motor to the dyno shop (they use their own headers).

Before stabbing the distributor I did spin the oil pump with my electric drill to make sure the motor had oil pressure.

I am having cataract surgery tomorrow so it won't be until early December that I will take it to dyno shop.

More to come  later ...

Dave

Nice motor! What angle plug connectors did you use? I will be making mine up soon.

Thanks, I have been working on it for a long time, taking my time and trying to do everything right.

Plug wires are 135 degree spark plug ends, Taylor 8mm, p.n. 70053. The plug ends are molded right into the wire, you cut them to length and push on the distributor ends, then crimping the brass connectors at the distributor end.

I really wanted nice clean wire routing so I used Moroso wire looms, p.n 72178. That set even includes a separator to use to keep #5 and #7 apart near the distributor. And a pair of 4-wire separators to use behind the rear of the valve covers.

Dave, real sweet looking big block. Good luck with the dyno as well as your cataract surgery. I had the surgery six years ago, now i can spot a fly a block away. Cheers. George

Looking good there Dave. It might be video time. Would love to hear it roar. Good luck with the surgery. Amazing what they can do. I had a torn retina this summer and they just give you 50 spot welds with the laser and I was off on holidays driving the next day.

RE: Ready to take to the engine dyno shop - DROPPED IT OFF TODAY

Not sure when it will be run, they have another BBC on their dyno now that they are having fuel injection problems with - the deal is, they will call when my 496 is hooked up, then I will go out there and they will run it through its paces. I will dig out the video cam and see if I can figure out how to use it.

Not sure about where you are, but here the dyno shops charge for everything, including their time to hook it up, and rental of their headers, etc.   Can you save money by hooking it up yourself?

SW Florida, USA is where I am.

Flat $500 for everything (hookup, break in, tuning, power pulls, etc.) only add-ons are if parts are needed (e.g. new gaskets for oil leaks or pushrod breakage). I expect no oil leaks (having primed the system on the engine stand) and pray for no breakage.

They have their own hookups for starter (I do not know just what it is but think it must be built into how they tie into the crank output since they did not want me to install the flywheel), fuel system (including carb feeds), water pump, throttle linkage and headers. BBC is of course one of their common motors so they have it all down pat. Package deal.

My old video cam suffered from battery leakage and is junk, so I ordered another one today, should be here before the Big Day.

That engine looks great.
I hope it runs good on the dyno.

Can't wait to hear the results of the beast Dave! Good luck.

I'm paying close attention to this one.

Almost ready to pull the trigger on some Brodix 270's, a Straub HR and the ridiculously expensive Morel lifters for my project 496.
