If you want a cheap performance version find a marine one. either MercCruiser or OMC Cobra 3.0 L. They can really take a beating and are very torquey for the size.

I liked that article...i'm sure many Fiero owners know/knew how to bring those engines to life.

GM Performance Parts used to have Super Duty program with special parts back when the Fiero was in production and a little beyond. Still Mercury Marine made those engines commonplace. The trouble with the inline fours was their vibration period at 4000 RPM, a result of one crankpin reaching BDC when each plug fired. 180 degree firing. The inline six was much smoother because they had 120 degree firing.

Interesting, I agree with the vibration at 4000, it has it right there! I have the 3.0 in my little Bayliner. Besides being a little crude, it's a good, reliable and easy to maintain little 4. But I usually hold her at 3200 when on plane, and it's perfectly happy to run there all day.

I'd imagine it would be a great little motor in a small rod. They obviously put iron liners in these after the Vega/Astro fiasco... right?

The Vega aluminum block is exactly why they were named the Iron Duke!!

They were entirely cast iron, no need for liners.

The Vega aluminum engine, didn't have liners, but the head was cast iron!!

Thanks
Randy

Was this not the same motor that was dropped in the Chevrolet Chevette. Folks love to crap on the Chevette but everything that i have ever heard from folks that have owned one, says that it was one solid reliable mode of transport. Please.................. no jokes on the "Shovette" theme of non sense. Just some clarification on this motor being in the Chevette and the Pontiac (Canadian) variation. Power to the four banger, may they live and prosper. Cheers. George

No, this one is different George.

But you are correct, the Chevette was a heck of a good car with a great engine as you say.

It's obvious they have quite a following because every time I've tried to be a Chevette/Acadian that's advertised for a price anywhere reasonable, it's been long sold already. It was everything a Vega wasn't...

Thanks Carl but do you know what the differences were between these two sturdy four banger work horses. I always thought the Chevrolet Chevette four banger was called the "Iron Duke". Over the many years, i always heard the references to the " Iron Duke", when folks spoke of the Chevette engine.  Cheers. George

They share nothing in common at all George. They are each a completely different design. chevette.jpgduke.jpg

I had one of the last renditions of the "iron duke" in my first truck a 91 S-10. They renamed it the 4 tech then and it made a whopping 105hp....let me tell you they are close to indestructible. The things I did to that poor truck through my teens! It had 200,000km on it when I sold it didn't use a drop of oil and was still running like a top.

Yes, as long as you could tolerate those horrible clattering timing gears!

Sounds like what I did to drown out my Vega's noises!
