63 & 64 Pontiac 4 speed column- will a 63 Chevy column fit?


I can buy a 4 speed 63 Impala steering column, will it fit in the Parisienne?

 

I am in Ottawa, so don't have access to my car, can someone email me(wdmack53@hotmail.com) or post a pic of the steering column, where it fits to the dash and up to the wheel? Outside the firewall is the same, but not sure about how it fits into the dash itself. I think I could just change out some of the "outside skin" parts?

From pics, they go through the dash different, so the Pontiac bottom of column to dash is definitely different, but the column itself looks "the same".

I bet you are right, that mechanically it's a match but because the Pontiac dash looks so much different vs. the Chevy dash, the cosmetic part will be wrong.

I know that's how it is for 66 B body, I installed a 66 Caprice tilt/telescopic in my 66 Grande Parisienne in the mid 80s. Perfect fit other than some tweaking where it came through the dash.

Worth a try but we know the 65 and up B bodies don't have a lot in common with 64 and down. Over the years I've swapped A body columns across the car lines with the same success as I had with my 66, so hopefully you have the same luck. Keep us posted please if you do try it.

I'm thinking someone did this on here a while back, I'll maybe do some searching on the forum and see if I can find it.

I'm only knowledgeable on the x frames, later stuff is hit or miss for me. I'm going to get this column and see what happens.

I've only ever had a powerglide column that you had to cut off the post for the shifter and those pot metal Cdn PRNDL's, and then you have the shifter levers outside the firewall. I did that on the 59 and 62- those 4 speed columns are very hard to find. This one is supposed to be complete down to the steering gear, just the steering wheel removed.

I know of a 4 speed column in a US model but I doubt it would interchange, they are so different. I did the US to Canadian column swap on the 66 I just sold, and only had to use the Canadian dash trim piece on the US column to make it work. The 2 parts looked identical until you tried them, they were just that much different so as not to work.

 My take would be that they ARE the same....Impala and CDN Pontiac ...for 63....and prolly 64........it just makes sense...

I'd grab it and see....you can always sell it if you can't make it work...

I got it home, the top ring where the signal light switch goes through, both the Chevy and the Pontiac have the same part number. The columns are the same, just the one covering where it meets the face of the dash is different and will need switching out.
