Just wondering as the title says. Any reason why just bolts were used. Any thoughts.

Both studs and bolts were used at various times on various carbs.

Q jets originally used front bolts with rear studs then went to 4 bolts.

The rear studs helped align the asbestos style asymmetrical gasket and tin head shield.

4 bolts were used later when they went to a single thicker symmetrical gasket.

2GC used 4 studs at first to ease installation, then went to bolts.

2GC had a problem until 1970 with the carb flange heat passage "eating" studs so they switched to bolts, sometimes only using 2 bolts.

The asbestos style base gaskets were easy to damage so studs were preferred before the thicker base gaskets were used.

Thanks
Randy

Thanks Randy, I appreciate your knowledge. I had a couple of those eaten ones and have now just replaced them with bolts and was wondering if there was something I was overlooking. Thanks again.

Good idea to replace the studs with bolts in your case for obvious reasons.

Happy to assist!!

Thanks
Randy

I prefer the studs in aluminum intakes. Red locktite on the studs into the manifold and anti-seize nuts. Less likely to strip the threads in the manifold.

I always use studs in Aluminum intakes, both for the carb and thermostat.

Studs are generally always preferred, except in older 2 bbl intakes.

Thanks
Randy
