A new 2+2 convertible on eBay

I feel like I've seen the one before, or at least a car with chrome louvres and stripe...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pontiac-Catalina-Parisienne-/291940316259?forcerrptr=true&hash=item43f8ffb463:g:tTsAAOSw5cNYJkfp&item=291940316259

Says its a pro frame-off restoration, but there's nothing photographic to back that up, maybe they'll add more photos.

PS:  Boy the forum is slow, the server seems overloaded!

Thanks for posting, will be interesting to follow this one. Curious about history and where this car is located.

X2 - something called "epnt.ebay.com" hangs it up a LOT.

X3 - "epnt.ebay.com" hangs it up a LOT on Canadianponcho. Slower here than any other site currently.

The car is gorgeous. Sharp-eyed car spotters will note the wheelcovers are not what you would expect on a 1968 2+2. That is due to the 15" wheels used with optional disc brakes rather than the 14" wheels that were used with drum brakes.

Does it have discs? It looks like it has the small drum brake type master cylinder. The stripes are some kind of chrome reflective material. Nice looking car.

hmmm ... dash shows PRNDSL which suggests column shift, but there clearly is a floor shift w/ PRN321 ... ???

Sure looks sweet, although I would nitpick about front seat upholstery not being nice and tight ...

The car has the reproduction convertible top switch, which unfortunately isn't very close to the original. But it wouldn't take a great deal to "fix" the little things wrong with this car.

I think it was John that pointed out previously that the term "PMD", as in the hubcaps, wouldn't be used in Canada. Does anyone know of any example of PMD anywhere on our cars?

I don't know that the car actually has disc brakes, but 15" wheels over the 14s were a clue that the car had disc brakes (for 1969). One could have upgraded to 15s without the presence of disc brakes, though very seldom did that happen. You are right, the master cylinder looks like a drum brake style.

As I recall it seemed like nearly all the 69 Big Pontiacs around had drum brakes & 14" wheels.

There used to be a 69 Grande Parisienne a few blocks from where I live that had 15" wheels and those wheel covers. Unfortunately I would need a time machine to go back and check to see if the center caps said PMD because it was probably in the late 1990s when I saw it. The car looked nearly identical to the Bonneville shown below:

That's a real striking car.....prolly my favorite color combo...but as somebody previously stated......the upholstery job is NOT up to speed.....with a 20K car.

Seems that MOST 2 plus 2's that I see have the Chevrolet Rallys on them....

I just thumbed my 67 and 68 showroom brochures.....and they are NOT shown on any of the cars.

Were they actually available from the factory?

Yes, but they have a unique center cap. Here's a pic of an original. I have repops on mine that are the same shape and don't say Chevrolet, but lack the black stripe. They've very close, but not perfect. But the pictured one is original.

Those wheelcovers came in both 14" & 15", I've seen both and both were available on Canadian Pontiacs.

It has the small drum brake master cylinder, and also is missing the disc brake metering valve which sits just below the master cylinder.   I'd say it has drum brakes all the way around.

It is correct to have the in-dash shift indicator on a console shift car, both my 70 2+2's are that way.   I have however seen a few 70 2+2's with tilt steering that have the in-dash indicator blanked out.

Huh. Learn something new every day. Seems strange to me - seems like if column shift, then show it in the dash, if floor shift, show it on the floor. But I guess somebody at GM decided to do it that way.

Both my 69 2+2 and my friends 69 ragtop 2+2 have the shift indicator on the dash despite also having it on the console. I'd be curious to see what they installed in the dash with a 3 on the tree car? Just a block out or did it say Pontiac or something?

On the 1970 tilt cars it was just a block out plate.

Manual transmission cars (floor or console) are just a blackout plate. My car has a "we didn't know what went there at the time" aluminum plate I like better, but it's not correct.

It's easy to retain the dash indicator on the automatic cars because the shifter drives a cable that runs the transmission, and the solid linkage to the column is still there, so why not? In fact if you could release the detent at the shifter, you could shift the transmission by rotating the column neck.... at least I think you could!

Yes you could, drove one like that for months back in the day when my floor shift cable seized then snapped.

In 1970, the block off plates were black.  I presume the 1969 ones are a blueish hue to match the instrument cluster.

And yes, on an automatic car, once you release the detent at the shifter, you can shift the transmission by rotating the column collar.  The shift mechanism comes all the way back to the column for the ignition lock.

Good point on the column lock, without the physical interlock they would have had to add some electronic lockout I suppose!
