Correct Rally Wheels for the Disc Brake Option (ZJ7, I Think)


Hi all,  since a lot of guys run the ever popular rally (1) wheel on their Canadian Ponchos of all differents sizes (as do I), I have wondered what actually would have come with the disc brake optional wheels starting in 1967.  

I have a set from a 67 2+2 with discs and they are 15x5" (Pretty skinny for a big car!) with very skinny trim rings and a small centre that just has "Disc Brakes" with no marque ID (as is usual with Canadian Pontiac.

I would like to know if collectively we could fill in the correct size and trim design for each year they were offered, just as a reference for anybody who is trying to keep things totally factory. 

I'll post a shot of one my 67's to get things started as soon as I can get to it.

I'm curious too. When I picked up the 68  ex police/RCMP car that 67 Poncho now owns, I mounted 70S era seven inch ralleys on the front and they wouldn't turn/roll. Had to round up some other steel rims to tow the car home. I can't remember what I used now, that was a while back. What's on there now Vince?

Here is a shot or two of the 67's rallys.  They are in primer now but  they were originally black which was the body colour of the car.

I've got the 15" original ralley's in my garage from my 70 2+2's, I've upgraded both cars to 15 x 7's.  The ones from my hardtop still have their Uniroyal twin white stripes on them, but the ones from my convertible have other twin white stripes mounted on them.  I'll see if I can check the codes on them, and I can't remember if they're 15 x 5" or 15 x 6", but I suspect the former.

Ken, I am betting those were 14" rallys? As far as I can find, there is no such thing as an original 14" GM wheel to clear the first generation disc brakes on a B body.

Weird. I remember how baffled I was that the 7 x 15s hit on the calipers. The car had no diff so I had to drive 45 minutes back home for more wheels. In hindsight I should have gone with a trailer in the first place,  lol.

By the way, as there may be a question, this 67 2+2 I got the wheels from had the little caps that have "Disc Brakes" on all four wheels.  I guess they were trying to advertise.

I am not sure the new style rallys will fit over the 4-piston calipers.... If I ever get at the car, I will find out for sure...

Yeah Vince as far as I know they were off that car.  Funny, I seem to remember that car as black. The wheels certainly were black though, at least when I bought them..

The following is specific to the 67 through 70 Rally Wheels usage on the Canadian Chevrolet & Pontiac B-bodies:

 

I do not have the list accessible, but on the Canadian B-body Chevrolets & Pontiacs 67 through 70 were the years Rally Wheels were offered as an inclusion with Disc Brakes (67, possibly early 68s) or as a standalone option (68-70).

 

67 came standard with 15x5 except wagons with would have been 15x6. Cars ordered with 70-series tires also would have come with 15x6. In all cases for 67 Rally Wheels were included with and offered only with J52 Disc Brakes.

 

68 started out like the 67s until the 15x5 size was depleted, then Disc Brakes came with 15x6 Rally wheels. For 68 Rally Wheels were no longer automatically included with Disc Brakes though 15" wheels were used, and you could also order 14x6 Rally Wheels on drum brake cars (15" as well if you desired 15" tires).

69-70 all Rally Wheels were 15x6 and were a separate option independent of J52. Rally Wheels were standard on the 1970 2+2.

Disc Brakes themselves were of the 4 piston fixed caliper design 67-68, then a single piston floating caliper design starting with the 69s.

interesting that the two high option 67 B body 427 cars I have were never ordered with disc brakes. Were they expensive or were people just comfortable with the new braking system?

I finally got around to checking the codes on the Rally II wheels that came off my 70 2+2 convertible.  They're YS code.  I did a quick internet search, and it shows they're 15 x 6" with 3-1/2" backspacing.   If I get real ambitious, I'll check the codes from the wheels that came on my 70 2+2 hardtop (they're cleaned & bagged with their original tires).    

Interesting enough, while the 2 cars were only built a couple weeks apart, they had different beauty rings.  While the outside edge was the same, the hardtop (the later of the 2 cars built) had an oval hole for the valve stem, and stainless clips all the way around to attach to the wheel.  The convertible had an elliptical hole for the valve stem, with only the 4 steel clips to attach to the wheel.  These elliptical hole ones wouldn't go on the 15 x 7" wheels that I put on the car.
