Where should your shock be sitting at neutral??

While under my car fixing fuel problem I noticed my shocks only have about 2 3/4 travel upwards before bottoming out? Never noticed when on the hoist because suspension is hanging down. I did move my shocks inboard to fit a larger tire, but wouldn't have thunk it to make that big a diff. Should the piston be sitting in the middle of the cylinder stroke? Wanting to buy new shocks, but want the right lenght.  Thx Jim

It should be be more or less middle.
But the bigger thing is does the axel hit the bump stops before the shock is fully collapsed? That would be my bigger concern with what I see there.
Also shock has to allow enough droop to let you get the wheel off.
So a few things to consider more than just that it's in the middle.

Thanks Dan,Guess I'll do some measuring and jack the car up.Always nice to be able to get the tire off. wink Used to put zap straps on to measure travel on race car, pretty sure I'd bottom them out on a big dip.

You don't need to wry bout taking the tire off Jim.I hear
you drive so slow you wont wear the tires out for 20 yrs.
Or is it the car that's slow?Anyhow you know what I mean.
Your slow.
