1954 Pathfinder L6 Flathead questions

I need some info on my 54 flathead, manual not here for a few weeks,,can't wait. I have just gotten this car and a lot of things have been done prior to me;

Linkage to carb from pedal is not connected but the only thing I have is a cable sitting on the floor, pic of this set up would be nice. Linkage binds at carb not installed correctly is my guess there too. Have answer from other post.

Clutch linkage is not operating throw out arm far enough, thinking this is the wrong connecting rod from pedal arm to throw bearing arm, pic here would help as well. Found pedal to throw out arm linkage was to long, all good now

Proper way to set up trans shifting linkage from steering column to trans connecting rods. Pics? I think this is good now to

I'm a visual guy so the pics would really help.

Another issue has raised it's head around the starter and gas pedal linkage. Either the starter is not original or the gas pedal linkage is wrong?? It appears the linkage is right if the solenoid on the starter was closer to the block but now hits solenoid ( can this be altered). I was wondering if the linkage for 8 cylinder routed differently which may fix my problem.

Any help here would really be appreciated.

Well I got the old girl running after building a new battery tray, revamping the clutch linkage and gear shifter freed up. In the process have found out that my exhaust and intake manifolds and single bbl. carb are from a pre 53-54 239 L6 and likely also the starter which has caused my throttle linkage not to work. But before I was going to put more money into her I needed to know if it would be worth it engine wise. So once I had the battery in I was able to fire her up and she ran pretty nice actually, so maybe the engine has had some work done on it. Unable to drive because of the throttle linkage but I have a lead on a few parts cars to see if I can get all the parts I need to get her back to original. Good thing is engine number matches cowl tag....yeah!

Those 239's will run forever if kept maintained. I've always said that once mine goes (had it 9 years now) that I would go the V8 route, but it just keeps on running. I've updated everything behind it (trans, driveline, rearend and brakes) but still running that flat 6. Kinda got to the point now that I like still having the stock motor in it - always neat when you open the hood and people see that massive block sitting there.

I am going to try and make a trip out to tilley,ab to flatla auto wreckers.I can look for some parts out there if you need them still. Also get ahold of fitz on the board, seems to me he had a bunch of the stuff you needed. For some reason a lot of 54 Pontiacs ended up in alberta so they are out there.

I put an ad in Kijiji and got a response from a guy that has a couple 54 4 dr. Pontiacs, so I'm hoping that works out well. Would love to have a year correct parts car!

Here's 2 54s I found at Flatla Wreckers. There doesn't appear to be an engine ibn the Chieftain.

chieftain would be the wrong engine anyways but it does look like theres at least part of the engine in the other.Hopeing they may have a 49 Pontiac out there too.Never been there but only an hour and a half drive so maybe worth a go

Well the guy with two 54 Pontiacs has not replied back to my responses so my thinking is he doesn't have the cars. Not sure why people do that???

So I think I have the correct starter....soon to go get.

The intake and exhaust manifold from a 53 239 L6, and possible 2 bbl carb from a 51 flathead 8.

If you see any issues with this combination please let me know.

Also what kind of temp sensor should I be looking for that uses a capillary tube from the left rear side of the block? Most are wire sensors???

Thanks

ok the intake exhaust manifold should be fine and the carb. They are all mostly the same from 53-54.Just on the 49's they used a single barrel intake, single barrel carb they changed that shortly after 51 I think. They went to the 2 barrel intake,2 barrel carb..through 54.I found a guy parting out another 53-54 but unfortunetly no motor parts.

Thanks again Brian for the confirmation on the manifolds and carb.

I will have the older manifolds and carb along with the starter, if it works out, available for someone who needs it.

RE: 1954 Pathfinder L6 Flathead questionsign

In the end I found a guy that has complete 53 4dr, 2- 54 4dr, 54 2dr, and a 54 DS. He has it all for sale but the 53 is mostly parted out. I was able to get a 2010s carb, two 10 o'clock positioned starters, one only for the case as it was out in the elements for a while. One of the 54's maybe coming home for all its trim pieces, and dash components.....nicer than mine and a fair price too. All his sheet metal seems very good, naturally patina but straight.
