69 Cutlass 4 door hardtop. Bridgewater, NS

I can't recall ever seeing a 69 Cutlass 4 door hardtop. At first glance I thought it was a Delmont 88. The hardtop body really looks different to me

Must have been a limited run.

Even the 4 door posts are hard to find today.

I don't know if photo's were ever posted but Hillar had one, it was gold with a brown vinyl top and that ultra rare 250 six. It was his father's car, a stylish but frugal architect.

There used to be a few A-body 4 door hardtops around, but far less than sedans.  There was another '69 Cutlass 4-dr ht for sale near Cape Breton a few years ago, a gold one.  I saw one around Halifax a couple of years ago as well - not this one.

It's a neat body style that is increasingly rare, and I imagine most of them were crushed with a lot becoming parts cars for 2-doors, so very few around today.

This one looks like a nice example if the floors and frame are as good as the ad says.

Well, I might as well admit that Cutlass 4 dr ht does nothing for me, sorry. Maybe it's those unstylish wheel cover, maybe the colour, or maybe it's just the whole package, I'm not sure.

Agree. It's a body style that looks good as a 2 door only (in my opinion). The LeMans looks awkward also.

It's not one I'd buy as an investment but it would be a nice summer daily driver.

There was one in our pick n pull about a year and a half ago. I saved a headlight bezel and a tailight bezel, going to try recoup my investment.

I think owning an ugly old 4 door car in great shape is kinda cool, as Todd suggests nice summer driver. For sure a conversation starter as we have witnessed here.

Try living with one. They grow on you. Although they are not sexy, the 4-door hardtop Cutlasses are a roomy yet a fairly compact car. Yes, they are a scarce sight. I remember seeing only 2 in the last 35 years. Actually one was a Buick Skylark, the other a Cutlass. This was back around 1981.

Any idea how they were for rattles and wind noise? I had a 58 Plymouth 4 door hardtop. Loved the car except for the rattling window frames and wind noise! Of course it was 40 years old at the time.

It's not even that I think it's ugly, it just lacks the flair the the 60's cars really had in most cases. You know, that "wow, what a gorgeous car" thing.

The only 4 dr ht I ever owned was a '71 Chrysler New Yorker similar to the one below (but without the vinyl roof) and it had a lot of wind noise pretty much at any speed above 40 mph.  Also couldn't help but notice what little side impact protection it had with its stubby "B-pillar" door support, not that we worry about safety with old cars.  Sure did pull on the highway with its 440 and 2.76 gears, though.  If you walked on it at about 50 mph you could feel the front end come up and it just took off...

So, all that being said, what would be a fair purchase price for that undesirable, ugly old 4-door Cutlass?

Assuming its all solid body and mechanicals, I'd say a bit more than a regular 4 door, less than a 2 door, maybe half that or less. I see good low mileage 4 door cars for sale for from $4,000 to say $8,000. Might be hard to get parts for, like say those 4 door glass rubbers.

This one is a little out of the way, a couple of hours south of Hfx, that likely means not many offers? I'd offer $5,000. I don't think this vintage of Olds is a high dollar car, compared to Chevelles or Beaumonts?

Yup... Beaumont too.  I recall back when I owned my first car - '68 Beaumont Custom sedan - in the '80s there was a really nice '69 4-door hardtop for sale at the same time, but it was over my budget of $200... biggrin

Price, Darryl, what price do you think is fair market value?  wink

Thanks Don, I appreciate your input.  I think you're right about the 4-dr ht specific items, as I don't imagine anybody makes reproductions for such a scarce model that doesn't have mass appeal.

I would take a stab at actual market value being $3,000 or less. Very low demand I am betting.

Yeah, it doesn't scream 'Cutlass' when you first look at it at a glance.  I think it's the silver colour & wheel covers, and the fact that it has 4" in wheelbase over the 2-door.

And I know that seems a little harsh for what appears to be a good solid car.

However, we've seen a number of times where nice 4 door cars started off high and they just don't bring big money in the end.

I don't know if Randy White ever sold his gold Beaumont 4 door (great looking car, much higher demand). It seems to me his asking price was around 5K and I certainly would guess there's way more buyers wanting a 67 Beaumont 4 door than a 69 Cutlass 4 door. It's just a fact of life.
