Just learned something that many of you may not know about 1964 and 1965 guages. this applies to chevelles and beaumonts
1964 fuel gauges are different than 65. this also applies to all small gauges such as AMP, temp, voltmeters starting in 1965, they are all built within a small metal round cup. all the guage faceplates are interchangable and are riveted to the cup in the same manner, and all the needles will pull off the same way
1964 fuel guages and others, are not built within a cup, they are larger and totally different
1964 fuel sending units in tank are 35 OHM and must be matched to a 64 fuel gauge, 1965 senders are 90 OHM and must be matched to a 65 gauge.
I found this out while trying to build up a SS guage cluster for my 64 chevelle, my cluster found at a junkyard is from a 1965 SS malibu.
very interesting stuff, so i dug out my stack of 64/65 beaumont dashpanels, and sure enough the fuel gauges are different between years.

My next step now is to gut out a 1965 beaumont fuel gauge and turn it into a voltmeter, then take the batt idiot light out and replace it with a volt guage, for a factory appearance if you catch my drift? i think it will work and look original
As an example, you can take a voltmeter out of a 1984 chevy 1/2 ton and use it to replace a 1965 malibu SS Ammeter, just by changing the faceplate and needle. Cool stuff!

MY BEAUMONT HAS 4 STUDDED TIRES AND 2 BLOCKHEATERS......AND LOTS OF OIL UNDERNEATH. The other one has a longer roof.
I knew about one detail you mentioned, that being the fuel sender resistance changing. I forget where I encountered this a few years back but I think it was on a Nova/Acadian or a full size. I imagine that GM likely did an across the line change when they went to 90 ohms.
Interestingly enough, the 65 Acadian/Nova oil gauges are mechanical but the full size US Pontiacs with optional gauges use an electric oil gauge. Am I remembering right that the Malibu SS oil gauge is also mechanical?
