58 Safari Radiator

Hi Guys,

Re: 58 Laurentian Safari 283 V8

Can someone confirm what U.S Chevrolet has the same comparable radiator. Is  the 58 Belair or the Delray the same

Any advice appreciated.

Much appreciated......................

I have installed the CPP 500 steering box up-grade and the clearance is really tight at the steering box, looking for a comparable aluminium radiator with integrated fan shroud and rather than go down the

custom built radiator route I am trying to find out if any 58 Chevrolet Radiators will work.

I also own a 58 Brookwood and the radiator looks identical to the one that was originally fitted to the Safari however none of the aftermarket Radiator suppliers I have found list the 58 Brookwood, they only list

the 58 Belair or the Delray

The 58 Chevy parts book has exactly the same numbers listed as those above in the Pontiac book.

Appreciate your input Guys..................

Am I correct in thinking then that ALL the 58 full size  Chevys with the s/b v8's would have the same radiators ?

It sure looked that way. The 348 was different.

Any Canadian Pontiac and Chev (US & CDN) for that matter will be the same from the firewall forward. So a convertible 58 Pontiac and all other body styles have interchangeable front clips for all 58 Pontiacs, same for Chev. All engines, suspensions, radiators, fan shrouds, steering, etc. will be the same for say a 58 Chev and 58 Cdn Pontiac.

For engines, the 348's are longer forward of the motor mounts by 2 or 3 inches, similar to a later BB 396, 427, or 454. The rads were the same dimensions on all stock V8's, shrouds on V8's were shorter for the 348/409, all SB shrouds were the same length front to back. The 6's had a thinner rad, but used the same mounting holes as any 8.

The 58's are very unique for lots of parts as you probably know better than me. But if it fits a 58 Chev, it will fit a 58 Cdn Pontiac, other than the unique body parts.

I moved my 409 into my 59 El Camino, replacing the 283. Rad, mounts tranny, 4 speed, clutch, BH, z bar, power steering, Pertronics, generator, starter, pulleys, even the longer SB fan shroud was a bolt in. The exhaust was the only difference, 2 inch versus 2.5 inch.

You have a very nice wagon.

I always try to do the research before ordering any parts as it gets really expensive this side of the pond if there not correct.

The 58s are unique in quite a lot of aspects especially the rear axle !

Interesting that you used to own a 59 Camino, as I have owned and modified this one over the last three years.

The inside of the 58 rear is the same, are the axles different or is the width different? I would have bet they were the same.

My 59 was a 283 with ironglide, I put a 4 speed in it. At one point I put my 409 in it, it was a lighter combo than the 283 ironglide due to the weight of the ironglide.

Very nice 59..............

The axle mountings are very different on the 58's compared to the 59's, I guess Chevy [ G/M ] realised it was a poor design and hence the one year only set up.

The axle 58 axle is prone to sideways movement due to the single upper claw style bush, on my 58 Pontiac I modified the mount to the Global West Heine joint configuration which worked perfectly with my air ride set up due to the extreme triangulation that the rear axle & prop shaft have to deal with.
