Reverse lights wire routing. 64 Parisienne.


how did the factory feed the wires into the trunk, i cant find a hole for the reverse leads. The licence plate light has a hole for a grommet and wire. Car is an console automatic.

Pictures would be great. Thanks

I added back up lights to a 64 CS about 15 years ago......

The factory tail light harness included the wires with connectors to plug the back up lights into.

 It was a fairly simple install.

I have owned my '64 CS since 1975. To the best of my knowledge, the original wiring for the reverse lights never did route through the trunk. My Pontiac has the factory 4 speed Muncie which has the back up light switch mounted on the transmission. When I put my car in reverse, the mechanical linkage moves the mercury switch and sends power to the backup lights. On my car, the backup lights wirings was never mounted through the trunk. The backup lights are obviously grounded to the bumper. The positive wire feeds from one light to the next and then travels along the x frame to the light switch on the transmission. If someone changed this routing, it was before I purchased the car in '75. I am fully aware that the wiring for an automatic with reverse lights may be different. By the way, my car came with factory reverse lights. I am certain that other '64 owners will have their own thoughts on this topic. I have enclosed a picture of the switch which mounts to my 4 speed. I am guessing it will be inside for a Custom Sport automatic because the switch would be inside the console.

Interesting about the 4 speed wiring you describe though. Sure does sound original but I've never seen that done before. A 66 full size 4 speed has it routed inside the car to the back.

Tell you what. Go wire your car with the same wire being used for brake lights, parking lights, reverse lights. Let us know how it works out. Maybe call the fire department before you hook up your battery!

well said. good idea for "advance call to fire dept. My experience in Feb. was just over 1/2 hr. wait till they arrived, by that time the garage was "DONE" !!!!

by the way, how is the reverse light wiring on a 66 run. since the lamps are the same in the bumper?

Each backup wire comes up through a special grommet in the trunk floor right above the backup lamp Pete. Should I get you a picture?

 Measure twice and drill. maybe my car never had the reverse lights connected, or the holes got filled.

i got my tail bezels back from the chrome shop. So more wiring to go. Im using american autowire classic update system.

On the 66 it's not just a normal round grommet. It's kind of a funny oblong blob of rubber with a tapered end and in the middle there's a groove to fit into the pan. Same idea that I've seen Pontiac use for the licence plate lights.

Well . . . here we go again. This backup light wiring question has been bugging me so I went out to look at my '64 CS. Buggernuts! My car does have the wiring coming through the trunk. I will not even attempt to explain why I did not remember this other than I am 64 and my car is 53. That's a combined total of 117. Enough said.smile   I have included some pictures to assist with the solution. The 4 inch blue line shows where to drill the hole. The factory wiring travels from the front of the car down the driver's side rocker and through to the trunk. I do not know whether or not GM had the foresight to wire all cars for backup lights, but this wiring concurs with MoboMac's description and is also in line with what was said about the '66 models.  Hopefully, my pictures and description are of some assistance.  Good luck.IMG_5081 (4)_LI.jpgIMG_5082 (3).JPGIMG_5083 (4).JPGIMG_5084 (3).JPG

.....dark blue from the back-up lamps to the connector, then black with single light green stripe...

That looks like the same rubber plug as 66. I bet they used that a lot. It looks similar to the fuel sender wire grommet doesn't it?

Same grommet as licence plate lamp too..  Im still wondering were the original holes were. My body man must have filled them just as he did with the antenna hole. Which im good with.
