Has anyone EVER seen a 396 or 427 valve cover decal?

So in the assembly manual, for 1969 it shows that you should have a 427 decal (part number 3923765) over TOP over the "Tonawanda Job #1 Team" sticker. I've seen lots of those, and even on an original engine car, never seen the coverup sticker.

Has anyone?

I think the gold 69 4 speed hardtop had that decal but I can't say for certain.

There's pictures of that car on this forum somewhere I think.

If nobody has a sample, time to get one reproduced!

I'm trying to restore this car to largely how it left Oshawa, and if they usually left without, I'll leave mine without too! Though if I could find the exact right sticker, it'd be tempting...

GMC Sprint had the "Invader" motor. Then people started making Invader stickers in other displacements, and people use them on GMC trucks too, where they're incorrect (I'm guilty too).

The one I'm talking about is a little rectangular 427 that covers the Tonawanda sticker.

Here's the same decal on the 30-something thousand mile 427 4 speed 69 2+2. Notice there isn't a decal over the Tonawanda decal. Do you have the smog equipment for your engine? Also notice in this photo the grease pencil marks on the factory vacuum advance.

Interesting.

I'm guessing the workers on the line didn't look at the assembly manual!

Just guessing.

I say that because the rubber oil filler plug is wrong for the 427 car engine.

That valve cover decal on the 69 2+2 above with 427 is a Speed Shop aftermarket decal. They used to sell them at Parkdale High Performance (among other places) in Hamilton around 1970. Chevrolet & GMC trucks did however use valve cover decals, Chevy just had the displacement, GMC had the Invader stuff.

'68 - '71 Chevrolet decals (shown on '69 engine lineup) :

No one reproduces the GMC 400 decal for my GMC, sadly. So I used an Invader decal for now.

And no, no smog equipment. I'm guessing that was removed on Day 2. This car was built for being the lightest possible car with every performance option, so it likely didn't last long.

I'm ambivalent about whether I should add it back. I likely should.

I would expect to see on that car new, a GM Oshawa black on white oil change decal on the inner fender on the side that has the oil filler cap, and being a '69 I would expect to see tune-up & emission decals on the rad support. There will be grease pencil markings on the body-coloured firewall. They also may have switched to black firewalls during 1969. Don't be surprised if the booster reservoir is painted black rather than plated. Either - or. 1968-69 manual trans V8s had smog pumps & hardware and no Thermac on the air cleaner snorkel. I would expect a Tonawanda #1 decal on any 67-70 orange block big block Pontiac or Beaumont.

There is one train of thought that GM displacement decals were either on the air cleaner assembly or the valve covers...but not both. (I'm not sure if that thought is year specific or not?)

For the Big Blocks (396 & 427) the decal went on the air cleaner 66 through (no BBC in Canadian 65s). Small blocks & sixes used black on gold valve cover decals through 1966, then switched to crossed flag decal on the air cleaner for 67.

As Dave says though it's in the assembly manual. It's tough to argue with that. There's an illustration of it.

Yup, I'm looking at the picture right now. They show it being placed over the Tonawanda #1 sticker, and they show it (for what its worth) as a simple 427 sticker.

I'd be money it looks like this, but never having seen one, still don't know:
396.jpg

Yup, the style, font etc sure looks like the 427 in the drawing doesn't it?

Where did you find the picture that you posted of the 396?

I googled "427 valve cover decal" and found a vendor and then scrolled through their list and saw that one. I've seen them used on trucks, which is how I remembered that they existed.

When you say it should be "over" the Tonawanda decal, do you mean"above" the Tonawanda decal?

It's supposed to cover it, so says the instructions in the assembly manual.

We've seen a few of the small square 396 & 427 decals on this site.

It's pretty primitive looking, rectangular decal, basic font, nothing fancy at all.
