Big block valve covers - restore or replace?

The big block valve cover on this car is weird - it's leaned over a little to clear the brake booster, but not as much as a Corvette.  But then it's got some other little weird outdent feature.  I'll post some pics - if anyone can find a repop set of these, please let me know, but they look like they might be specific to the Impala/Pontiac.

Someone looks to have wrapped a chain around this motor like they were pulling it out of a river, and that creased the valve cover.  My metal guy can fix, it but it'll be 3 hours at least and that's more than a set of repops would be worth, so have to decide if these are special in any way.

Absolutely keep the originals imop. That looks like it was stamped that way, can't see a chain causing that bulge with a serious corresponding indent. And if it doesn't interfere with anything, leave it in. It's a small part of the history of the car after all.

The valve cover looks fine to me, and the hump thing is correct. Please note the standoff for the sparkplug wire holder is behind the upper hold down bolt. Many repros are ahead of the bolt.

if you go repop make sure they have the drippers. The cheaper ones usually don't. Corvette ones usually are the most authentic.

You can't see the -damage- in the photo, I was just posting what I thought made these kinda unique. If they were perfectly reproduced and on eBay for $50 I'd be silly to spend 3-4 hours of body time on them, but it sounds like I should keep 'em!

Who's going to judge a Canadian 1969 Pontiac except for you guys anyway? So I ask here so you can judge now instead of later

You'll wish you had originals when you try to bolt on a set of cheap repops,.... the bolt holes don't line up.... among other issues. You will not be happy with them.
If you want nice reproductions look at Cranes Corvettes but take a deep breath before looking at the price.

So far everything is stock except the water pump, which is 1971. Even the distributor is still correct. I have the right carb. Might as well fix the stock valve covers!

Did you buy the Crane covers for your 427?

Who, me? No, I'm going to metal-work my originals to make them like new, if I can. On my GMC402 set I used a hammer a dolly body set and got them nice, but this one is wrinkled and it's on a compound curve, so it's above my pay grade. But I know a guy who can try.

No, Fake68 has a 427 with chrome covers and I'm wondering if he has experienced the difference. It sounds like he has first hand experience with the repro lack of quality.
