1950 Pontiac transmission swap to S10/ T5 5 speed transmission


I am in the process of putting a T5 trans in using my original bell housing, using the original throughout bearing, flywheel and pressure plate, with a Chev S10 clutch disk to fit the T5 trans input shaft splines.

I expect if i have the transmission hole in the back of the bell housing bored out to the size of the transmission shaft housing, that should work, the pilot bearing will fit.  The only issue is the mounting holes for the bottom of the new transmission, maybe some blocks welded onto the bottom of the bell housing that can be drilled and tapped to accept the transmission mounting bolts.

Has anyone done this swap, and what other problems did you encounter?  Or is there a better way?

There is lots of information out there on Chev swaps, however I cannot find any Pontiac swaps.

You will have to convert to "open" drive shaft as well, which means swapping out the rear end too!!!!!! IF you can get transmission hook up to engine, maybe have to build a adapter plate , engine to bell housing????

My 50 Pontiac has an open driveshaft that is the way it was built, and a Canadian car.  It is somewhat different from others I have seen, with different front suspension as well. 

I believe a lot of them had parts interchangeable with Chev parts, this one is different, maybe a change during that year, does anyone know?

I will also need to shorten the drive shaft a few inches once it is all back together.

I have never heard of an open driveshaft on that early of a Canadian Pontiac. Possibly someone installed a 55-57 Chev-Can Pontiac differential and driveshaft and 3 speed transmission. If possible could you post a couple of pics of the diff front and back. The 55-57 diff was a fairly easy swap if you had a complete parts car. I did the swap with a 51 Chev along with a 283 way back in 1970.

1950 Pontiac transmission swap to S10/ T5 5 speed transmission


I did the swap on my 51 several years back. It has the 239 flat 6. I had to make a custom adaptor plate to marry the two together. Used original pressure plate, throughout bearing and clutch fork, but I got the clutch disc from an Astro van (slightly larger diameter than the standard s10 disc). I did end up having to shorten the input pilot shaft to get things closed up. You will have to cut out the cross member and fabricate a new one along with the parking brake assembly. I'm running a rear axle (3:42) out of a blazer along with a rear leaf kit from Chassis Engineering (no longer in business). The only thing I've noticed is the original motor mounts are too flimsy now that the large rear one on the original transmission is gone. The T5 does have a mount with it but is so small I doubt its doing much. Plan was to fab some heavier ones this winter but didn't get around to it.

It was the best thing I've done with the car - at 60mph the old 6 is only turning about 1800rpm - and it will run there all day long.

The plate is 5/8" - used what we had available.  I did use the S10 driveshaft - ends only as it needs to be lengthened.

Here's some photos as requested.  If any info is need let me know.

Your adapter plate is very similar to mine.  I used 3/4 inch plate, same countersunk holes etc.  The difference is I made the large round transmission locating holes on the lathe and welded it into the large plate, will post pics.  Also ordered a wider pilot bearing as the stock one is too narrow to fully support the T5 input shaft end.

I will be using a new T5 clutch disk and the original Pontiac pressure plate, throughout bearing etc.

Looking forward to getting it finished.

The adapter plate still needs to be cleaned up a bit, also I put in a wider input bearing and using round allen head bolts to mount the trans as there is not sufficient room for the 1/2 inch bolt heads and socket to tighten them up.
Hopefully all will work.

Your car is actually an American Pontiac. Some US Pontiacs were shipped to Canada as an incomplete vehicle and final assembly was in Canada. This was to avoid some of the import duties as the cars were considered auto parts. Your car would have a Canadian serial number plate and one of the mounting holes in the plate would be oval to line up with the holes in the firewall. This is because the holes were punched to fit the American style serial number plate.

Thanks for the information. I have compared my 50 with others with the Chev type body. On mine the tag says made in Oshawa, one of the rivets does not fit properly as you said. It has an open drive shaft and the body is quite different. Also the front suspension, steering box, brakes, drums etc. are totally different.
This leads me to a question, when ordering any parts for the front suspension what do you call the car, as it is not really a Canadian Silver Streak.

I should have the car back on the road in the next week or so after I receive my new radial wide white walls.
The car is stock except for the S10 transmission swap and numbers matching 239 now with 1954 crank, pistons and cam. I will also add the 54 intake manifold and 2bbl carb.
This should make a nice performing car.
Will let you know in a couple of weeks.
