$7000 is crazy money for that. No paperwork, heavy damage to the rear, interior is poor and it's a 4 door...

Mr. Wright our neighbour across the street had one, pale yellow and white roof two tone, I was born in 57 so for me to remember the car means it made a big impact on me. We had a 61 Strato Chief when Mr. Wright was still driving his 59. My Dad always said that Mr. Wright's car was one of his favourite cars.

It really is a striking car and I have to wonder what the seller really wants to see at that asking price. It sure looks repairable but as others have said the interior is in bad shape and we don't have any underside or engine shots to judge.

I think it's a little overpriced, and I'm not impressed at the seller's cavalier attitude about the ownership papers.  If I were a prospective buyer I would insist that he get the papers clear in his name or no deal.

Anybody have an idea on whether the rear damage is repairable, or would it have to be a panel replacement?  There are a lot of complex curves there and some hard points that have to be just right, so I'm thinking replacement, but I'd be interested to hear what anybody with body shop experience would have to say about it.

That car was on Kijiji three weeks ago for 5k OBO. This current seller is just trying to make a quick buck.

At 5k OBO, I was almost contemplating making the trip across the country to get it. A 59 Impala flat top is on my want list.

Ah, where would we be without flippers... wants to make 2 grand but can even be bothered to get the ownership documents straightened out.  I'm not sure how it works in BC, but if it's the same as NS he probably doesn't want to have to pay any taxes or fees that might cut into the 'profits'...

I would love to have a flattop too, and I agree at 5 grand it would be more attractive, though the shipping costs from BC would make it less so.

Still, if you wanted to bring it back to original there is a lot of money to be spent on this one, though I'd be tempted to fix the rear damage, and whatever rust issues it may have, and drive it as is with the nonoriginal colour and nonoriginal seat upholstery (looks like it needs a good cleaning, though)... though by the time you try to match the paint and make it look right you might as well go all the way and put it back to black.

Either way, I actually like this one quite a bit, but I'm not 4-door phobic... wink

With all those complex curves and edges you'd need to be a good body man to get that straightened out.

Yeah, see my question in the post above... I'm thinking you'd probably end up having to get a junkyard rear panel (and maybe a trunk lid? can't tell if it's bent), as it would be tough to get it looking right.  Then you have to get the hard points where the trunk lid mates to the panel bang on or you will have sealing issues.  The quarter panel looks to have a buckle in it as well.

But, I'm not a bodyman, so somebody who is good at their trade might be able to massage it back... would be interesting to get feedback from somebody in the trade.

Ya, the right side quarter to center rear end is really out of wack.

1. Its likely a California car, the body looks very solid, these cars rusted over the headlights, inside and outside the rockers, plus the rear quarters, so you'd need to see those plus the floor bracing and rear body mounts. Rear glass leaks were common on all these old 50's and 60's cars.

2. I'd guess a good body man could fix most of that rear damage without new panels, but a repaint could be $5-10,000 if you hired someone to do it and there was not a lot of rust fixing to do. Fixed up, top dollar for this car would be $15,000, with the interior.

3. They did a very good job on the paint for the colour change, not much black showing where the paint is off and it looks like an old paint job.

4. Paint likely done when the interior was redone, both look old and easily could be the same age.

5. MC, they have PST in BC, so the comment on paying sales tax is likely why title has not been redone.

Its a nice old car, would look better black or Roman Red than whatever this red is IMHO. Likely a 283.

If you do any fixing on a 4 door, you will almost always be upside down on money. I looked at one a long time ago here in NS, same car but a 348. An all apart car with rusted out floor, fellow wanted $3,000 for it. Everything was shot.

Interesting take on it, Don.  The left doors and rocker panel look solid, but the paint has peeled off for some reason - either poor prep or maybe some kind of chemical intervention (like a brake fluid spill or something...)?

If it's a California car it would definitely be worth the pre-flip price IMHO.  Paint and bodywork prices are crazy, and I think for that reason just about anyone who paints a car nowadays will be upside down with it... it just depends on how much you will lose if you sell it.

I think it would look best in its original black with original-style red upholstery done - it would be a stunner but would up the pressure for top-notch bodywork.  It would really be fascinating to see a skilled body guy put the original shapes back into those panels.

Thanks for the info on BC's taxes - I figured it was such, a lazy flipper just wanting to make a quick buck on the back of a hobbyist.  Not to say that a person shouldn't be able to make a little money on a car, but this guy probably bought it out from somebody who really wanted it for themselves (like 59Paris, for example) and now wants to make a quick 2 grand for little to no effort, all the while sticking the buyer with the hassle of getting the ownership papers straightened out.  If there are any issues with it, it will be the buyer's problem to sort out (like if the owner previous to him did the same thing...).  IMHO, this is just one of the things that has driven up the cost of the hobby for everyone - but at the end of the day... it's there and has been for a long time, so we just accept it and move on...

Definitely NOT a California car.....The VIN tag in drivers door jamb is Oshawa specific.....

In BC...we get to pay BOTH...PST and GST on used cars....thanks to our previous Liberal gov't.

I'd say.....it's a west coast car....that had a color change "cheapie" paint-job....30 years ago...prolly due to a fender bender....perhaps a front end hit....

The bottom 6 inches ..of the front fenders.. rear quarters...and above headlights are likely full of bondo....That's how rust was repaired back then.....

Seat inserts are NOT stock.....so they were re-stitched....at some point.

If this was listed for sale recently for 5K.....the current seller prolly paid $3500.....and is fishing...to double his money...

If it hasn't sold in 2 weeks....watch the price drop......and try your 5K offer....JMO

Thanks... so what is your sales tax percentage?  In NS we pay 15% HST ("harmonized" sales tax, or in other words PST + GST...).

Could be full of bondo, but I see rust on exposed paint-peeling areas... wouldn't know till you looked at it in person.

I don't think anybody said that the seat inserts are stock... a blind man could tell that they are not stock (literally).  I said specifically in my posts that it is not stock...

Nobody knows what he paid for it, but one would assume that an offer was made, probably a lowball offer to maximize profit.

I like it, but even at 5K, it turns into 8K after shipping, and then you have to dump another 10 - 15K into it.  Over my 'toy' budget these days, so I'll pass.  But I like it... :)

As much as i have always loved 1959 Chevy's, this seems steep for a car that does not run with no paperwork and the big ouch in the back. I would stay clear of this car. I would stay clear of this car for any money, as much as i love the model. This present owner must have bought the car and then realized the mess that he bought. I doubt this is a quick greedy flip, this is a realization that the car needs too much work and money to make it feasible. Cheers.

If he's asking a lot more than he paid for it,then it is a quick greedy flip.....

most guys would just ask for what they paid....or less, just to cut their losses.

And you're right stay away from this one.....far away.

I agree, except for one point.  He states in the ad: "Car runs good and drives good everything is there."  So apparently it does run.

MC......Our Provincial is 7%.....and Federal 5%.

Prior to the Liberals attempt to shove HST down our throats here.....we only paid provincial on used cars....if they were bought from a private seller.

After we voted to have the HST thrown out....they stuck us with the Federal tax on used car private deals.....

ANY tax...on used goods.....is a TOTAL rip-off.....IMHO.

Getting the papers for this car should be relatively simple....providing it was previously reg'd...in BC.

All that is needed is a completed BC transfer of ownership form.....from the seller.

I've done it numerous times.....Cost is less than $50.00.....plus tax....and transfer fees.....(not sure how that would work on an out of province deal....on the tax part)......but will prolly take 2-3 weeks for correspondence, etc.

Is it really that simple, if this car has been bought and sold numerous times without the ownership being transferred each time? Wouldn't the person who is still the registered owner have to sign off on it? Assuming they can be located, are still alive etc.

It IS pretty simple.....and this is how you find out...if the car was stolen...

Here's how it works...

The purchaser sends the transfer form...(filled out by both buyer and seller).....to ICBC Vehicle Records...along with a check...for $10.00.

They search the VIN.....and send you the last previously registered owners name and address....

You send a registered letter....to the last reg'd owner......along a NEW transfer form..and ask them to fill out....and sign the sellers portion...

Then you wait 2 weeks.....If the last reg'd owner signs off...and returns it.....you're in...

If the letter comes back undelivered......you're in....

If you get nothing back...after 2 weeks....you're in....

Then you take your results....and post office receipt...to your Autoplan agent......

They give you a declaration form...that needs to be notorized.....

Back to Autoplan....and a new registration #...gets assigned...to the original VIN.

Pay the tax and transfer....and you're DONE...

If the cops come to visit.....you're DONE...biggrin
