Your friend should also look for a 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix 428 which is just an enlarged 421. The grand prix 428 has a 4 bolt main block good no 62 cylinder heads. The 370 hp has 10.25 compression and the 390 hp has 10.5 compression . The only difference is the 390 hp uses a thinner head gasket, has factory header style exhaust manifolds, dual snorkel air cleaner and uses a slightly more aggressive camshaft when equipped with a four speed.
Royal Oak Pontiac in Michigian used the 428 as a replacement engines in 69 GTO,s for a dealer inspired race car.
Is your friend going to Norwalk OH to the Tripower nationals? I will have 3 of them there for sale.
-65 WG 421 fresh rebuild, fresh 77 heads, forged pistons, roller tip rockers, never ran. Will learn more about this once I am back at the house, does have soot on it from garage fire all is ok though, I scoped the bores and pulled the valve covers. I might keep this one though. $5500 USD
-66 YK 421 HO block and crank. rusty, but looks serviceable. I did not check bore on this when I was out there. Looks like a decent block. Would work with buyer on this to make sure no cracks and such once sent to builder. $1800 USD
-66 YH 421 core, turns over, considered a good core engine, block, crank, pistons, rods, 092 heads, intake, timing cover valley pan, crank pully, $1700 USD
