Got it back together, & fired up!! # 5 still dead, SO after a lot of swearing & head scratching, I gave those 2 valves a extra 1/4 turn & # 5 came to life. Re-set all valves to 1 turn [ little by little] # 5 dead!!! gave them extra 1/4 turn & back to life!!! Assuming # 5 has weak or gummed up lifters??? Road test was 95% better but still "slight hesitation at 55 & on take off.55 Mph. in 3rd. gear & "nailed it" had to "peel" my head off back window!!! I think this hesitation is Carb. related as this car sat for 17 yrs, with limited start ups and very few miles put on in that time frame. Sure put a "grin" on me as this sure hauled A$$ like never before.

As Greaser mentioned previously add some Sea Foam to the Gas. After this winter I am a believer. I fired my snowmobile up which hadnt run in a couple years. It run like crap. Wouldnt hardly idle. Added some Sea Foam to the gas and went for a burn. I maybe went for 15 minutes and I could feel it running better and better as I went. When I got back it run like a new machine. It saved me redoing the carbs. Worth a try.

That's too funny Tim, I buy Seafoam by the case. The big block LeMans got a tune up and a special treat of Seafoam this weekend. I like to chug a bottle straight in the Carb, its quite the smoke show but its great top cleaner, next straight in the crankcase, you can hear the idle step up as you pour it in, that's how good it works on freeing up sticky valve train. Reset carb and the 454 Roars like a Lion.

I WOULD ASSUME YOU YOU BACKED THE NUT OFF TO GET FIRE ??
Nope Had to tighten # 5 valves 1/4 turn extra!!! Lifters gummed, or carbon build up in that cylinder. Got the sea foam ready for car but today's raining so Wednesday it " gets it" oil . gas, & down the carb. & road trip " Hard"

'64 Parisienne CS "barn find" - last on the road in '86 ... Owner Protection Plan booklet, original paint, original near-mint aqua interior, original aqua GM floor mats, original 283, factory posi, and original rust.
Another road test to Uxbridge yesterday morning, to Doctors. Ran like "garbage" on way back unless foot in it. R/cover back off & cranked to TDC, # 5 exh. rocker sitting much higher on stud than all the others??? Exh. valve was open on backing off rocker nut & hardly any threads showing above nut. Took rubber mallet to rocker arm but just SOLID, Intake valve one moves a bit so "Thunking" I've got a "stuck lifter in full pumped up position????? Stud height is all the same so not pulled out of head. Soooo off comes the intake "AGAIN" another $ 50 for gasket set, & really investigate while in there, thought about doing a cam swap, but on reading my motors book, 62-64 409 only, engine & transmission must be removed to get oil pan off, then remove T/cover " NOT" This is "really" Pi$$ing me off now!!!!!!

I have seen the clip come out of the lifter allowing the lifter to pump up more the it should and wont bleed back down because it pumped up past the bleed hole. The lifter may have been stuck and if there was excessive valve lash the clip may have popped out.
Intake off, pulled # 5 lifters, Exhaust is "pumped up to top and seized "solid"!!! Put round end punch in lifter & whacked it with 5 lb hammer on bench, " NOTHING" won't budge!! no wear on bottoms of them, all the rest seem ok & ones with valves open are down in the bore as they should be. Soooo do I just replace the one with "likely a Chinese" replacement or do them all with same?? Definitely this is my "miss" & why that rocker is sitting "high on stud. No missing clip, thinking I'm going to put it in 30 ton press and see if it moves or "busts apart" no loss it's "F'd" anyway!!! This "miss" has been in car since I bought it, sat for 17 years with only occasional starts and hardly driven at all!!! everything I did tune up wise helped, including Vac, adv. unit that was seized too.

I say if the others are fine leave 'em alone. Is there any sort of procedure to "break in" a new lifter on a used cam lobe?
Soak new one in clean oil, then coat the bottom with "assembly" lube !!! Luckily the 409 uses the same lifters as SBC so good availability !!! May take the clip out & see if it will come apart??? seized pretty solid!!

Got new lifter but think I got the last set of intake gaskets in Ontario a week & 1/2 ago!! Tried every supplier I could think of all came up empty with a 4 to 5 week delivery time ,so Going to re-use the "fairly" new ones, putting a skim coat of sealer on them. They aren't damaged and came off clean. I pumped up lifter last night with oil & let it sit in oil over night, have "Cam Lube" for installation!!!! Had the crazy idea "maybe" good time for cam swap, but reading up on it , 62 to 64 409 only "Remove engine & trans as a unit, remove oil pan, then you can get T/cover off!!! Talked to a few guys on 348/409 site, said you can do it in car but 99% chance you'll have a pan leak!!! It's that tight!!!

Got it fired, set timing at 12 initial [22 total] could tell as soon as it fired it was on all 8. Road test was 100% better than it's ever run since I bought it!! Taking it to Fowler's Corners tonight for Cruise in & give this 9er a good run & hope the Sea Foam cleans any junk out

BIG 10/4 on that!!! Lot's of help here & 348/409 site Have never seen a lifter pump up & seize, but lots of collapsed ones. If I hadn't noticed the exh. rocker sitting too high on stud & nut flush with stud, never would have caught this. Ran really good on test drive & going to have to adj. my take offs now & not 'ride" the clutch with all 8 firing, " IT"S a REAL FINE 409 " now!!!!!
