Now that I have new 17 wheels and a C3 brake system with Wildwood calipers, my current 14 inch spare tire will not work on the front. The spare tire is an ancient CTC GS 78 bias ply that seems to hold air, for awhile but I need to do something. Because its a vintage piece of Canadiana, I thought I would post a few pics of this tire and ask if anyone has any suggestions on what could be possibly be used as a spare with cost sensitivity in mind.
The tire itself actually looks not bad and is not checked but it most likely is from the early 80's in my estimation. I could use the 15 inch rally wheel as seen beside it but I would have to use a 5 mm spacer on the front to clear the Wildwood caliper. So, I really don't want to do that, plus, these rally wheels are pairs with the same codes, two from 76 and 2 from 79 and I don't want to split them up.
The 14 inch rim has some stamping on it but its hard to read but I am betting it is a GM wheel most likely an original from the car. I am going to see if I can get some clear stamping off it to verify this.
So, I am wondering anyone would offer up their two cents in suggesting a cheap wheel that I could use without having to buy another American racing wheel. As I blew my old car budget for this year, I am looking for a cheap alternative. Did GM make a 16 inch rally wheel?
I'd wager that a light truck might have something you can use;
I know that the S10 used the same car bolt pattern, and they started coming with 16" wheels in the 1990's - so logic should state you can get larger "spare"/steel wheels...
