Horns don’t work: Easiest access to them? (66 Bonneville)

Alright guys,

trying to get my horn(s) to work in my 66 Bonneville. I do have the manuals but I cant seem to find some info in them..

1) where is the relay located?

2) what is the easiest access to them? I know the two horns are located at the front in Between the grille and radiator. whats the easiest access? I took out the screws near the headlights as well figuring I can get access by removing the grille, but seems more screws Holding the grille place? I have the manual but cant seem to find the page where it shows how to remove the grille?

thanks for any info/help!

Mike

Re the location of the horn relay, here's what a buddy sent me re his 65 Catalina.    "Mounted on radiator support just under drivers fender next to battery"

You should hear the horn relay clicking when pressing the horn button.  If no clicking, then possibly the horn button isn't proving the ground.   If clicking then either the 12 volts isn't getting to the horns, or the horns are toast.

Thanks for the info! I dont hear clicking when the horn is being pressed.
I'll check it out again on the weekend... hopefully I dont have to replace the horns..

If you don't hear clicking then the relay isn't engaging meaning no voltage is making it to the horns. Check the fuse and wiring leading to the relay.

With no clicking sound, my money is on the horn button not providing a ground to the relay.

I just glanced at my 1970 Canadian Pontiac wiring diagram. I'm sure the color codes are the same as your car.

For power, there's a 10 gauge red wire coming from the battery through a fusible link. Not sure when they started using fusible links, but you should always have +12V there.

For ground coming from the horn button, there's a 20 gauge black wire.

There's 14 gauge dark green wire going from the horn relay to the horns. You can test the horns by disconnecting that connector at the horn relay, and apply +12V to the dark green wire. The horns should honk as they're grounded by the built in bracket.

If the horns work with the above test, and you have +12V coming from the battery on the 10 gauge red wire, try grounding the 20 gauge black wire and see if the horns honk.

The relay on a 66 is different than the 65. 65 is on the side of the radiator support to the side of the battery where as the 66 is under the radiator support top bar more in front of the battery.

might need to check the bulkhead connection for the forward harness, do your headlights work?
