Bent tierod


so this happened...anyone else have this happen? Hit nothing that I can remember, took it out the garage and steering felt terrible...1CF585E7-A9D0-4308-906F-ACE7F8590D98.jpeg

Ouch, that is brutal...

Silly question but did a floor jack somehow end up under it or something? Somehow I'm doubting that, but it's hard to imagine doing that while driving and not notice it.

That's a pretty severe bend. I don't think I've ever seen one that bent (making the "Chinese?" question valid).

You didn't turn the steering wheel while one tire/wheel was up against the curb or something that prevented the tire/wheel from turning?

I've seen some pretty significant flexing and twisting happening when someone cranks the steering wheel on a car with power steering while one wheel is up against the curb preventing it from turning. Normally, I would not expect the tie rod to bend like that, but if it had a small bend in it before doing the power steering thing, I suspect it could buckle like that.

Original part....wasnt loke that before. Had a thought this morning though. Had a flat but no spare so had to have a tow. Suspect the towie have have done it when he winched it onto the tilt tray. He unloaded it close to the shed and just idled it into the shed with trashed tyre so would not have noticed until I put the replacement wheels on and drove it the first time after.

He towed it onto the deck with the hook around the tie rod. Or he chained it down with the hook around the tie rod. That all makes sense now.

Ammature hour, didn't look as to where he was hooking, likely someone who hadn't encountered a rear steer setup and just shoved the hook in around the control arm and got the tie rod as well, seeing as they are so close.

Saw a guy hook the winch cable to the sway bar on a Chevy 2500 that was stuck in the ditch. The truck didnt have tow hooks and was way down in mud. The truck came out with no damage other than a broken away bar. I was surprised as was the truck owner that the sway bar was hollow. The owner did give permission to hook it that way and was warned about possible damages before the pull.
