261 Carburetor kit?

Hi folks,

Picked up my new to me 57 Poncho today, pretty excited, it's even better than I originally thought!

It hasn't run in probably 30+ years, so I am going to overhaul the carburetor right off the bat. It's a 261 6 cylinder model.

Do any of you know where the best place to get a carb kit? And additionally, do you know which kit I might need? Prefer to order from Canada if possible, but if necessary, I'll get it from the States.

The carburetor is a Rochester, I don't see any ID numbers on it, but I believe it to be a "BV" model - as far as I know, it's the original carb. I can post pictures if you can help me identify it, as I have it on hand.

Thanks,

TFC

I think i have a kit for that carb.  i bought it by mistake a couple years ago.  Let me check tomorrow, and if you can post a pic it might help.

I took a half dozen, just uploading them on my ultra slow internet. As soon as I have 'em uploaded, I'll post them!

Luc I actually have a rebuilt carburetor that is the same as what you have shown. All nice and clean ready to install on your car. I would like to get $50.00 plus shipping for it if you are interested. Let me know and I can take it over to the post office on Tuesday to get the cost of postage. Thanks from Bob in Southern Ontario.

If you plan on driving the car you will need a supplier that sells kits with an ethanol tolerant accelerator pump. I buy my kits from a company in Daytona Florida . There should be a complete carb no. stamped on the side on the carb. If I was at home I could get you the original carb no. and the replacement carb no. from my parts book. Over the years a lot of 261 engines were changed to a smaller carb from a 235 since they were more plentiful and easier to find. I should be back in Canada by mid may.

Thanks Bob, I appreciate the offer. It's very nice of you.

I think I'll stick with mine though and clean it up, put a carb kit int and make sure all the settings are back to what they were as a good starting point. I've done plenty of carbs over the years (have fixed up many, many motorcycles, smaller cards, but same work) and should be able to get it spiv and span in my ultrasonic cleaner.

Hi Al,

Now that I look at my own pictures again, I see a faint 10516 seems to be stamped on the bottom mating surface. I don't see any other numbers anywhere else on the carb though, unless some will be revealed after cleaning.does 10516 mean anything to you?

Quite right about the ethanol side of things. I'll definitely make sure the kit I eventually get is ethanol resistant, good advice!

What is the name of the Florida supplier you have in mind? I'm hoping to have it running very soon. With any luck, before mid may!

Thanks for all the help guys, found a carb kit and got it rebuilt. Should have everything I need to get it running now, going to go to my buddy's farm and do that probably next week.

Cheers!
