Exhaust system for 1957 with 261 L6?

Hi guys,

Now that I've got my carburetor rebuilt, I'm going to need to put a complete exhaust system on my new to me treasure once I get it running (hopefully next week).

I noticed when I picked it up that everything back from the exhaust manifold is gone, so I'm starting from scratch. There is a good muffler shop here in Regina I'm thinking of taking my car to, unless a person can buy a complete system for a reasonable price?

It's a base model with 261/6 & 3 speed standard transmission. It's currently stored at my buddy's farm an hour away, I don't want to drive it back on the highway and risk burning a valve on the way here, thinking of putting a three foot section of flex pipe on it with a simple tractor muffler to get me home safely & somewhat quietly.

I want it to be quiet and dependable, nothing fancy needed!

What do you guys think?

TFC

Luc, the exhaust system on your car is the exact same as a 1957 Chevrolet with a 235 in line six cylinder. That is what i ordered for my 57 Pontiac and it was perfect in every way and i do mean perfect. It will also end up less cost than having someone make up a complete custom exhaust for your car. Good luck and cheers.

Thanks LS, that's good to know, I was wondering exactly that. Even better that you've actually done it, I was thinking about seeing if I could order up a stock 5-6-7 Chevy 235 system. I see a basic kit can be ordered for about $235 USD online (plus shipping, tax & duty, of course). Where did you get yours from?

Do you know if they differ at all between a standard and an automatic? Mine is a standard three on the tree.

Luc, you have to order a 1957 Chev exhaust not a 55 or 56 exhaust. Must be 235 six and it does not matter if it is automatic or standard. I got mine from ECKLERS Chevy parts in Florida. Cheers.

I had very good luck with a company called Classic Exhaust Inc. Very reasonable and shipping was super fast. At that time I had it shipped to the border. Could check their website to see if they ship here.

Are they the ones in Ohio? If so, I bought off them too and shipped to the border. Great price, the only drawback is for the purists the front pipes aren't correct because they come in two pieces so that the shipping cost is kept to a minimum. Great fit and quality though.

Yes that is them and they discussed the option to cut those in half. I did it that way and it was free shipping.

That's great, thanks as always for the leads guys! Going to get on this ASAP and I'll report back on what route I decide on & how it worked out for future reference, so the next person has the info at their fingertips.

Cheers,
TFC
