I hope the shell that he buys has an ownership. Insurance companies are notorious for branding vehicles as irrepairable or salvage. If he buys the car back, repairs it and documents the repairs a body shop may be able to get the salvage title changed to rebuilt. The problem is when you insure the car with a rebuilt title most insurance companies will only allow liability insurance, no comprehensive or collision coverage. In the insurance industrys view, they already paid out the total loss on the car and wont pay twice.

as far as I know the ownership hasn't been branded as he hasn't signed off on it or taken a settlement yet. Car was taken to body shop to see if repairable, but twisted up too bad!!  In talks with Insurance Co. they don;t want him to get it back. 400 HP SBC "built 700R 4:56 rearend, suspension etc. so lots of $ tied up tied up in it!!  Wet roads & cheater slicks don't mix!!!!!!!!

There was a post car shell on one of the Facebook pages recently, maybe the Beaumont/Acadian page? I can't recall for sure.

I think it was in the west, maybe Alberta?

I'm not on face book so can't check, but thanks, would prefer one in Canada as  no way to go south with border closed. Whatever turns up I'll pass info onto him>

Talked to neighbor last night, Ins. co. refused to sell him car back, & had it picked up from body shop to go to auction!! He's thinking they have a buyer for it there?? said there was 10 grand in motor, another 3 grand in trans + R&P steering up front, 4:56 Ford 9" posi rear end, 9" rear mag wheels with slicks & skinny's up front!! De Jardin's had the policy after they bought out his insurance co [ State farm??] or who ever, & kicking himself for not upping insurance coverage after he got it on road, took a $hit kicking!!!!!

One thing a friend said about having your car in an accident, never let it get hauled by the insurance company to their wrecker's yard. Get it hauled to your yard, or even better to your favorite body shop for storage. Your body shop should charge them storage fees- gives your insurance company some motivation to settle on your terms or keep paying storage. $25/50 per day. Have your body shop not release the car until you say so.

Never sign over the motor vehicle registration until you get what you want. If you and they haven't come to terms, they are still paying storage, its costing them money. Not letting you have your damaged car back is a policy, not a law. I think his storage hit $5-6,000 before they settled.

If not too late, have someone who can bid on the car buy it at the auction.

Everyone should be looking at Hagerty's Cherished salvage.

Here's a letter I recv'd from them recently.

If you were able to retain ownership of the vehicle the insurance company would probably brand the title salvage. It then would be up to you to change the brand to rebuilt. My stepson has a Dodge pickup that he bought with a rebuilt title and had problems getting insurance coverage on the truck. He could get liability insurance, but no collision or comprehensive coverage.

How do they establish "salvage value" ?? could be quite high if they go by recent auction values, or is it set price by a book??
