1963/64 Stock 4 barrel Air Breather...fit a Holley or Edelbrock 4 barrel carburetors?


Need some information regarding stock air breathers on newer carbs.

Will a stock 4 barrel air breather from 63/64 fit  on a newer 4 barrel carb

like a Holley or Edelbrock ? If not, can modification be made to use the

stock breather,or are there stock looking air breathers  that can be purchased.

Don't know much about carbs and air breather fits,but I would like

to use a stock looking air breather. Any information would be appreciated.

Id have to go and measure but I think the neck for the WCFB (Square box) is smaller than the one for an Edelbrock, Holley or Quadra jet.

Seems to me that I had to make an adapter to fit the old stock WCFB aircleaner onto the Edelbrock carb on my 39 Buick with the 327. Its not hard, just a sheet metal tube the right size for the Edelbrock as a snug fit on the Edelbrock flange will fit over the bottom flange of the stocker. Use a sliced piece of rubber vacuum line to seal it and voila you have a stock looking setup that just sits a bit higher and is held tight by the centre stud.

I could take  pics of my setup  if you want.

If you don't want to use the stock aircleaner I may have a use for it as I've been thinking of  converting my 283 two barrel on the 66 Beaumont to a wcfb four barrel setup  (The old L77 engine option)

I have the adapter to go the other way, to use a 70's air cleaner on a WCFB or smaller throat carb.

Ken,

I don't have a 4 barrel air cleaner,only a 2 barrel......I might need to get one for the 4 barrel Edelbrock..

An adaptor is a great idea to retrofit.

The other question is,will the 4 barrel air breather give sufficient air required to operate the 4 barrel Edelbrock carb properly?

Or does it really matter?

Another possibility might be to machine a custom adaptor to use my original 2 barrel air cleaner. I'll have to look into that possibility.

Find an old 4 barrel air cleaner with the right base, cut out the "ring" and weld it in to the 2 barrel air cleaner.

This one started life as a 2 barrel air cleaner. There's a 600 Holley under there now.

The 4 barrels 4gc and likely wctb were 4.5 inch and edelbrock and Holley are usually 5 inch. You can get or make a spacer but I like Carls way best. Just find a newer air cleaner with a 5 inch base, not sure when the carbs went to larger, but maybe one from a Q Jet, etc, likely cheap too.

A Holleys dual fuel lines can crate issues with sitting some stock air cleaners down over them.

If you buy a new or reman carb, they frequently have issues so they should be checked over to be sure they are built to spec before installing them.

I can't recall for certain but I think the base I used was from one of those cheap aftermarket chrome air cleaners. Easy to find, cheap to buy and an original air cleaner doesn't get sacrificed!

I have a 1406 on a stock 300hp cast iron manifold with an aftermarket air breather. I bought a breather with a drop base because I was concerned about hood clearance but I had to use a 1 inch spacer under it to get carb clearance.I Made my own out of a tin the right size. The top edge is like a paint can lip for the breather to sit on and I crimped the carb side for a bit of added rigidity.

I am also on the hunt for a breather for a 4 barrel. Considering looking for one from a Buick 401 nail head, aka 445 Wildcat. My Dad had one and if memory serves me right it is similar to the factory 2 barrel one I have. I don't want to go with the Chevy one because the snorkel is small and I am concerned about getting enough air flow to the 4 Barrel. Has anyone considered this option? If so how did it turn out? If not, why not, would love to know.
