The very last Power Glide i ever owned was my 57 Chevy, it of course was a cast iron P.G. I as well miss the whine and reliable nature of that tranny. I had it rebuilt the year that i bought the car in 1984 and it never let me down in any way till i sold the car in 2007. I remember pulling that tranny off my 283 and i was shocked at how heavy it actually was.

My research says a cast iron glide weighs 230 lbs and an aluminum glide weighs about 100 lbs. Not sure if that is with or without fluid. A 235 weighs about 650, a sbc about 575, a 409 weighs about 620. A 230-250 weighs 440 and a 292 560. A BB weighs about 675, a cast iron t10 100 lbs and aluminum case Muncie 75 lbs. A 700r weighs 135.

Your collective persuasiveness has me excited to open the black box and do this. I've done some looking online for a kit but there is so much out there that I thought I'd come to you and ask for recommendations where to source a quality kit. There aren't any drive-ability issues with it but it has 130,000 miles and I want at least another 50 - 80,000 miles before I have to consider taking it out. I'm putting quality parts in the car and taking the time with the total project. The plan is for it to be a reliable daily driver, it could see 15,000 miles a year, don't know, that's why I'm thinking total rebuild. I'd like to with a quality OEM kit and look forward to your recommendations on the best place to get one.

I had gotten my TH400 kit from Summit. It was a summit branded kit and had pretty much everything I needed and worked well.

I really appreciate the offer, if I was just replacing seals etc. I would take you up on it but since I'm going for a full rebuild I will leave them for someone else.

Is the kit for the iron and aluminum glides the same? Whats in a kit besides gaskets and seals?

My mind must be slipping, I thought I posted this info somewhere here already. I am just about finished the build on the glide. I ordered a master rebuild kit and a complete bushing kit, replaced all 6 bushings. I was enjoying the build until I had lapse in forethought. I installed the planetary and output shaft assembly and had no issue lining up the drive pin for the rear pump. I turned the planetary to lock the pin in place. I have developed some vision issues that hamper me in doing fine work or work in areas that are not well lit. I decided to turn the transmission on its end so I had a better view of the tail area. It shouldn't have come as surprise that the weight of the planetary and drum caused the assembly to drop and broke the pin that drives the rear pump. At that point you feel totally stupid, at least I did.

I know I can order a new pin from the same company I bought the kit from for about $12 US +++ but decided to check out a local machine shop to see about getting one made. The old one is in tact and would make a good template. They said there was no need make it and turned me on to www.mcmaster.com who sell a 28 pack of similar pins for $7.00 US. I can have a lot of senior moments with this deal. The rest of the rebuild has been done, just waiting the arrival of the pin to finish the job.

Thought I'd update this chain and let everyone know to disregard my post of Nov 16th saying the McMaster.com pins were going to work. Like many things, they looked good on paper but not so much when you try to put them to use. When I went to install one it turned out they are machined a little different near the head of the pin, a little thicker than the rest of the pin and it will not drop down far enough to allow the pin to engage the drive gear in the rear pump. Yesterday I call Classic Transmission and they are sending the correct pin that FedEx says will be here tomorrow. I think the delivery time is optimistic but happy the pin is on the way.
