HEI IN A 327


I WANT TO PUT HEI IN A 327.

I HAVE A DISTRIBUTOR OUT OF A 305.

WHAT TYPE OF PLUG AND GAP WILL WORK BEST??

You may get varying opinons on this but I would put in the original AC Delco number for that application and gap it at .045"

Some guys say when you gap those at.045 vs .035 like with points, the "bridge" isn't squared up to the electrode but I don't really think the HEI knows or cares, it's got plenty of zap to do the job.

I second the .045 plug gap. It will idle better and I havent had any trouble with the original spark plugs. On one 283 I found that one heat range colder seemed to work better with hei.

Remember to " trash" the resister wire going to org. coil and replace it with Full 12 volt line on ign. switch!!! 045 has worked for me on past cars & present wagon.

On Holdens we just bridge the start and run wires at the ignition switch, that bypasses the resistance wire.

I put a HEI in my 327 4 years ago. Gapped a new set of AC 44s at 42 and have not touched anything since. Car starts right up and idles perfectly. One of the best things I added.

 I'm trying to figure out how that would work. To me that would only give 12 volts at the distributor while you're cranking? I must be missing something?

Heres a question. Will the big HEI cap fit behind a stock 60's 327 breather?

On my HO350, I originally had a all new HEI dist and wanted to use a 14" open element breather. Wouldn't work. The two touched. And my stock 67 327 breather was even worse. 

So I went with a Pertronix small cap electronic distributor.

THAT WAS BIGGER ROUND AND FLAT LOOK.

If the large cap/air cleaner interference is a problem they make an offset air cleaner base that allows for clearance. I have one on my 327 and it was about $25

 BRIAN , WHAT DID YOU USE FOR HEI IGNITION WIRES ??

I WANT TO KEEP THEM UNDER THE MANIFOLD LIKE ORIGINAL.

As far as I've ever seen the only application that ever used ram horn with HEI was the Chevy big trucks. The plug wires for a 77 Chevy C60 would be HEI and it would be a ram horn manifold. I've never tried that combination but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Mid 70's Corvette wire set work great, they are long enough to route down and under the rams horns. Have 3 with them.

I'm not sure what manifold they run, I just picked that set out of a catalogue many years ago based on the lengths and worked great on my 65.

I see an ebay listing for 66-80 Corvette small block manifolds and they are centre dump straight down so that all makes sense.

ALL GOOD GUYS, CHECKED OUT THE WIRES AND THEY LOOK GOOD FOR MY APPLICATION.

ORDERED A SET THIS MORNING FROM MY LOCAL GM DEALER SHIP.

THEY COME IN BLACK wink  NOT BLUE, YELLOW ETC.
