Camshaft


I have a freshened up 1965  283 engine. Motor is standard bore, original power pack heads(freshened up) dual plane intake and small edelbrock carb. This motor is bone stock. What is a good cam to put in this thing to possibly wake it up.

I have had good luck with the Mellings MTC-1, 204/214 dur .420/.443 lift, nothing raunchy but gives a nice burble out the exhaust and stretches the rev range a bit more than stock. Coupled with a TH350 rather than powerglide, it really wakes up. Had this combo in my 65 SS, most would not believe it was "only" a 283.

I am NOT a cam expert!

But ask an expert if the Comp Cams High Energy 252H is a good fit?

.425 .425 206 @.50 110 lsa 

800 - 4800 rpm

 You could experiment with 1:6 rockers too maybe??


You could go with Corvette 2.5 inch rams horns and 2.5 dual exhaust too!

keep the stock look but let it breath a little better!

I've never used a Comp Cam but I've used Melling a number of times as Dan suggested and been happy with them.

Good info. here as I'm wanting to keep my 283, but pep it up a bit.

Not all of us need to over compensate with 427s!winkbiggrin

 Yeah, I've come to realize that not everyone in this hobby makes the best decisions like I do...

But back to the topic, one thing to keep in mind it's certainly easy to over cam a 283, especially if it's in front of an automatic.

Something else certain 305 heads work better??

so Ive read I have no personal experience 

but they may be a cheap upgrade and you could pocket port them yourself 

just another idea for you

all these little things added together should add nice street power

again I am NOT an engine expert

I have also heard about using 305 heads. I am no expert but I have heard that the 305 has smaller combustion chambers for a boost in compression, hardened exhaust valve seats and the mounting holes in the heads for more options to mount engine driven accessories.
