Decoding engine casting date...

Hi.. Looking for some help decoding a BB 454 engine, it's a replacement block. The casting date is J 23 74. Would that be November 23 1974?

Thx in advance

And I would have said September 23 1974 because I thought they didn't use the letter "I" !

Was thinking Sept as well. Skipping the I makes it the ninth month.

Hi.. That's good it's a 74. Was trying to determine some of the engine specs and was not sure of the year it was built

I also think September of 1974.
I was going to say it would have been in a 1975 model year but then saw you said it was a replacement block so who knows.

I would think its a mostly complete short block, the HEI distributor is from a Corvette. So I'm thinking the compression ratio is around 9:1 so I can use regular (87) octane.

Interesting that chevy skipped I for September because Pontiac did not.

Just checked, its 8.25 to 1 for the LS4 in 1974 and was still spec'd to use 91 octane minimum.

Odd. Why would they want 91 octane on an 8.25 to 1 compression?

Could it be that 91 was unleaded while the others could be either ?
