drivetrain noise 53 poncho

well i finally had my 53 out on the road for the first time after several test drives around the property we took it down the road everything went smoothly up the 3 gears we went, when i took my foot off the gas pedal and coasted it sounded like there was a fire engine siren winding down! it was loud tried it again noise dissapears when i put the clutch in,its not the clutch car still has tork tube and stock 3 sp trans,im thinkin its in the trans or tork tube also no niose when car is coasting in neutral. never heard that so bad before WOW what do u guys think oil is up but trans was low before i checked it also is this trans same as a chevy one from the same era,id like to keep car stock

Usually thats a symptom of rear axle gear noise. You could have a bad pinion bearing causing the gear noise. I would drain the rear axle and look for metal particles (silver in the oil). The rear axle and transmission should be the same as a Chevrolet if its a Canadian car.

Wondering if it might me your clutch throw out bearing. I once had a 52 Pontiac that was making a noise similar to what you are describing. Have to remove tranny to replace it. Bob.

You say no noise when coasting in gear, I assume that is at highway speed with clutch pedal out?

Any noise when coasting in gear with clutch pedal in?

And no noise clutch in or out at low speeds?

Can you run it on a hoist or on stands and see if you can tell which end of the car the noise comes from? Maybe use a broom handle on the rearend and on the transmission and bell housing?

Could be rear end making no noise when not under load or the throw out bearing or clutch/PP. could the TO bearing be on the fork wrong? Or something touching the torque tube (Ive never owned one of those either)?

Try just lightly depressing clutch just enough to take up "freeplay" & put some tension on T/O brg when noise there. If it goes away then I'll bet T/O brg is "Roached"

clutch pedal in,no noise.no noise under load. noisey when coasting clutch out in gear. noisy when coasting seems to be in all gears as soon as car coasting here comes the noise when in gear throw car in neutral no noise im thinkin trans.....its loud i bet they parked car because of this car has not been on road since 89! sounds like a siren winding down on a old firetruck. does anyone know if i can run the motor with trans in gear with the tork tube dissconnected? this would isolate the diff and tube or i will try the broomstick this week like i says very hard to tell where its coming from no back seat in car and open to trunk area thx for the replys guys

It sure does sound like pinion bearing or gear whine.
