Reviving a 1962 Strato Chief for a drive home - Edmonton to Toronto

It really looks and tastes like motor oil also it is a manual shift so I don't think it has transmission lines. Im going to see Ken today so hopefully Ill get my hands on some parts I can use. Thanks guys!

Was thinking powerglide so it has to be motor oil. May be the old stink pipe dumping some oil from sitting a long time, 62 didnt have a pcv system I dont think, it may have been optional in 62 though.

Ya I think maybe just some of the gunk that sits around the trans mission. I met ken and he told me there is a slot near the transmission that allows for drips, I guess I just got her hot enough to expedite some drips! I will post an in-depth update in a bit

I looked at the photo's showing the alternator and engine numerous times and I finally saw the end of the broken adjuster bracket bolted to the water pump.

So, you've broken both the upper (adjuster) and lower (stationary) brackets. This may have been caused by the lower bracket being only half there (as PONTIAX mentioned). Once one of the brackets breaks, the remaining brackets days are numbered.

Hey Guys so here is an update! Parisienne66 and I ripped out to Ken's lot and found an alternator and a lower bracket, we welded up a new top bracket and she ran. The brakes were soft as can be and when you really hit em she try's to toss you in the ditch not to mention that she wobbles around 105kmh. SO, I decided that this will be the end of the road trip for now and tomorrow the car will be headed to 67Poncho's shop in Foam Lake for a shake down. Not sure if anyone here uses Hagerty car insurance but their "3rd gear" package gets you 200kms of towing a day. Now I say this but when I called them just now I had to squabble with them because they already towed it about 135kms into Saskatoon. If this ever happens to you just call back and talk to the American side and they will sort you out.

I gotta say guys this forum has been a god send. I would like to make a donation and I would also like to thank all of you for your support. I am new to Pontiacs but the few hours I got to drive my new car were amazing. She cuts a beautiful silhouette and I love the 261. Never knew a straight 6 could be so smooth. I will be back in a few weeks or a month to finish off the trip and get my Strato Chief home to practice my body work and hopefully spruce up the interior. One interesting note is I tossed a couple cans of sea foam in the tank and ran it most of the day. After it sat for a night there was a ton of carbon coming out of the tailpipe. I never really thought that stuff worked but I guess with a car that has been sitting the results can be dramatic. Pretty cool to see.

When I bought the 454 Laurentian from Hillar's estate in Toronto in 2011 I debated the idea of driving it back to Calgary. However, as Hillar hadn't really maintained it, and it ran very hot I decided against it and had it shipped by Mackie Auto Transport out of Oshawa. I did drive it from Toronto to Oshawa, and as it had the heater core bypassed it had limited defog capabilities in the rain, and the signal switch needed replacing. The battery was also weak.

Upon getting it in Calgary, I took a look inside the radiator and it was basically plugged. The brakes were poor, even worse then expected in a 4 wheel manual drum system. A few months later we totally re-did the brakes, and the rear cylinders were totally plugged with rusty gelled brake fluid. So, I'm glad I had the car shipped.

Yah its the smart thing to do for sure. But hey, id I hadn't gone out there I wouldn't have met all of you guys and gotten a great referral to a mechanic who knows these cars. Seeing Kens lot was worth the price of admission alone. SO many cool cars.

Sounds like you had some fun, in spite of the troubles. Welcome to the Canadian Poncho optimists club.

I drove a 62 BelAir the last 30 kms home, the guy I bought it from said he was driving it and no trouble to drive it the 200 kms home but I had it decked most of the way.  Almost home the brakes failed, the electricians black tape I found on one of the rubber brake hoses started to leak.

Yah thats kinda what I think I got going on here hahah. I did have some fun and Saskatoon is a nice town to spend a weekend in. I'm looking forward to doing the rest of the trip but from my previous two excursions I have learned that Northern Ontario is really no joke. Had this happened up there I would likely still be there. I just hope I didn't damage the engine with the overheat, the rad was barfing pretty bad. Anyway, the club now has a member in Downtown Toronto where I don't think there was a member before! Anyone looking for some parts transported to Toronto or the GTA can message me and I will be happy to grab them for you.

Oh the suspense of waiting for your report.

No pics?

Does Hagarty have a limit to the number of "service tows".  With my CAA PLUS membership I can have up to 6 "service calls" of up to 200 km each.

They don't overtly state a # of service tows but the first tow they were happy to help with. The second one they tried to get out of. When you call the 888 number you get the Americans and they are all smile and happy to help. Once you're on the Canadian side however they are a bit less eager. I explained to the guy that when I signed up for the service they told me that I could get this car towed 200kms a day for as long as I needed it. Anyway it seems to be working out but if that changes I will update you guys.

Pics ! Couple cool old cars from Kens and you can see the carbon out the tail pipe from the Sea Foam. There is an Immaculate Bronco at the Saskatoon Airport for some reason. The Prairies are beautiful as always.

Are you not riding shotgun in the tow truck?

I wish but I had to get back to work in the big smoke. Thanks to Areoplan miles I have accumulated for a decade and the free tow's this didn't hurt too much. I had a nice lil weekend in Saskatoon. Parisienne66 took care of me big time.

Just curious, how did you get a hold of Parisienne66 (Bradley).

He messaged me with advice for my trip and then when I got into trouble reached out. I gotta say he gave me an incredible amount of help. He let me tow the car to his driveway, got me set up and showed me around Ken's place. He welded up a bracket for me as well. Truly the epitome of kindness, I am grateful for it and can't wait to pay it forward when I get the chance. He's done a ton of road trips with old stuff and offered his help which I really needed. Great dude and another reason this community is so valuable. I made my donation to the paypal account because I honestly would have had a much rougher ride through this without him and all you guys showing support.
