Stumble on acceleration

Hi ponchonians,

just checking to see if someone knows what these symptoms might be,

I have 1965 stratochief with the straight 6/250 one barrel.

upon accelerating it started to stumble the engine sounds like its running fine but has a definite stumble in it It seems to be becoming more pronounced, It started last summer in uphills only but on my test drive today it happened on the flat,

Its a three on the tree and I changed points for a pertronix system with a new coil.

I checked the tranny fluid and its up. I also had the rearend serviced.

Any thoughts much appreciated,

Thanks

Bon

That would be my guess. These carbs are fairly easy to rebuild.

Climbing a hill and the stumbles starts is a good clue, but not definitive.

Is it a stutter? Or a bog, loss of power?

Start with the carb. Clean and rebuild it. Float level correct? Simple.

Good fuel supply?

Does the mechanical advance move free? All ignition components good? Timing set?

I love Pertronix, but they have been known to cause some strange things. Never my experience so far.

Is it a basic Pertronix 1? Is the coil the correct one (Ohms) for this model Pertronix?

Guys will add to this.

Give it a good load of sea foam in the gas tank and take it for a long 75 mph drive, 30 + minutes. Use only 91 octane ethanol free gas if you only put a few kms a year on the car. If that doesnt change anything, then check out the carb.

I agree with DONSSDD. 100 percent. The cheapest and easiest route to try first and you can do it without professional assistance. I believe that he meant a 75 mile drive as apposed to mph drive.

P.S. Would also check your fuel filter and your pump pressure at the carb inlet. Have seen low pump pressure cause this on v8's

Hi,
Thanks for the quick response,Its not a bog or loss of power more a stutter, I rebuilt the carb about four years ago when I put the pertronix in. The updated coil is a match for the pertronix,Although the Lordco fella almost sold me and EFI model. I put a new fuel pump in at that time and checked the pressure off the pump at 4.5 psi.
I have let it sit over the winters six months or so with ethanol laced regular gas. Im not sure if thats problematic?
I was just looking at a can of seafoam, Ive heard variable things. But I am willing to give it a shot. And I have had good success with higher octane on some engines. Id be pushing that girl hard to attain 75 mph, Im sure shell do it though, I dont mind that floaty feeling. I did adjust the timing and all the linkages seem to be working well.I did increase the spark plug gap I believe to about .30 or so, if I remember correctly.
I will try the sea foam and high octane first before anything,
I was hoping the weather would break out here on the Wet Coast, but Im dealing with intermittent at the best of times ,I only have one speed wipers.
And not much hope in sight,
I will give you all an update,
And a super thanks for all the input.

Bob

Rain away type stuff on your windshield is good for highway driving in rain, I leave the wipers off on the daily driver. The 63 doesnt see rain. I did mean 75 mph, but whats your speed limit? Ours is 110kph but I drive over that.

Ok
I will check my gap,
And throw in a new fuel filter,
Its a 100 but 110 kph in spots.
I bought a new windshield from impala bobs and it turns out it was made offshore, China to be precise. In the rain in the day its not bad but at night it leaves a visible hazing which lasts maybe half a second before the next wipe . It makes it very hard to see, Kind of scary. Im pretty sure thats not normal. My wiper blades are new but I will change them and see if that helps.Ive had that issue with other window coatings also. Not sure about rainex. The little straight six in the full sized B body Wagon sets its Own speed. Thats about 100 K pH and about 30 miles an hour uphill or 50 KPH,
I like to take it to Calgary from Vancouver and back so Im asking for all kinds of weather. Thats why Id like to fix the stumble,You wouldnt believe the amount of stories I get from people who remember being kids in wagons like that.

Thanks
I will keep updating

I found the rainex type coatings worked best with wipers off but at highway speed- it blows the water right off and was more clear than using wipers. In city driving at night it had some glare when you had to use the wipers as your speed was to slow to remove the rain.

With regard to the haze that you get with the wipers on I have always added some liquid dish soap to the washer bottle. Joy is one of the brands that seems to work well.

Haven't seen any staining of the paint or any trace of excessive soap residue from using it. It clears the windshield quickly.

An old trick picked up during my car rally days.

I dont have a windshield fluid bottle,
I think it was reserved for Parisiennes,
Its a stratochief. Maybe it was an option in 65 , but I didnt get that option

You made me look this up, becasue I was quite certain that by 1965 windshiled washers were mandated;
And low and behold the information I found suggested that the washer was mandated for 1968!?

Here is a link to a 1966 Pontiac (Canadian) brochure;
On page 15 the Strato-Chief is listed as having a wiper/washer system standard...

LINK

The 1963 brochure (same site) does NOT list the washer as a standard feature.

Ah-ha!

I found a 1965 Canadian brochure - sure enough, that model does NOT specify a washer!?

LINK

How hard would it be to add a period correct washer?
Because all the great suggestions aside, I'd sure want one on my car.

Strato-Chief pages ffrom the premier brochure

Standard and suggested options page from standard brochure

You don't get the washer with a single speed wiper in 65

RPO C14, Wiper System - Windshield Electric option must be specified on the Laurentian and Strato Chief to get the washer system. It's a 2 speed with the integral washer pump with the pushbutton in the wiper control knob. You get the bracket on the rad support along with the jug.

Standard on Parisienne/CS.

66 ?

It would be dead easy to add a 2 speed depressed wiper to any 65/66. No doubt all the wiring is there for the 2 speed/washer switch. The jug and bracket are a dime a dozen, although good washer nozzles could be a challenge.

What great links jonny, thanks,
Reverse lights were an option too . Ive got blanks instead. All the wiring is in place ,Im assuming they gave you that wiring harness with all the options but it was another story if you got the option.. I picked up some nice reverse lights from Tinman when he was closing down, just never got around to installing them I also have a two speed motor with pump that came in my stratochief pile of stuff. Just never got around to hooking it up. Way too many projects.
I just finally found a 65 waggon right rear tail light assembly on eBay which I got totally excited about. Ive been looking for seven years. Now I can focus on other things, ha ha.
I will look into the washer bottle and the two speed switch next.
This thread sure went sideways but I actually enjoyed all the great info,
Thanks guys

I wish I had known. For about 15 years I've been picking parts off a 65 Bonneville wagon south of here about 300 miles at a wrecking yard in Minnesota.

You have Pertronix? Try unplugging your vacuum advance and drive. Sometimes the movement of the points plate will cause a week signal. At least on mine it did. Stumbled like crazy until I unplugged the vacuum adv.

I did pull an ad in poncho looking for that tail light assembly, I did not repost as I shouldve.Drat
No,It does not have the spray nozzles. Yes I do have pertronix, it seems like an odd thing to pull off your vacuum advance, but its definitely worth a shot I will try it.
Thanks
Carl, if youre heading down south anytime Im still looking for the rear cargo window inner moldings.
At least half of that station wagon has parts that are as rare as hens teeth,

Thanks for the tips

I'm hoping to get to that yard in late summer. With Covid my trips there, usually at least twice a year, didn't happen.
