454 flywheel

Hi.. anyone have a 454 flywheel (168 tooth, 11") sitting on the shelf they need to get rid of? Mark IV (I believe) for a 71-79 454?

TIA

Yeah, I know. Just checking to see if someone has "boat anchor" they didn't need...

Check with a shop that does marine work. Many inboard boat engines use a manual transmission flywheel. A 454 from a boat may have what you need. Over the years I have obtained small block marine flywheels. Once you clean the paint off they are like new. I did get one small diameter flywheel from a Mercruiser 120 (153 four banger), that wasnt drilled for a clutch, but all the v-8 flywheels that I have seen were drilled for the clutch.

It will bolt on alright but it will rattle your teeth out!

That's the beauty of GM. You can pull a flywheel off a 194 6 cylinder, bolt it onto a small block, bolt it onto a big block, take your pic. The only problems are the external balanced small block 400, the 454 or the 292 6 cylinder in some cases.

I thought the 454 had a different bolt pattern and the center hole had a different configuration?

The 454 flywheel has the same bolt pattern as a small block engine. A small block 400 flywheel will work on a 454 as they are both externally balanced. The crankshaft bolt pattern and flywheels changed with the introduction of the one piece rear seal engines in 1986.

It does bolt up to small blocks. Speaking from experience. I had one and installed it on the 350 in my 72 Nova thinking how bad could it be. Didnt take more than a drive around the block to have to park it, acquire the correct flywheel and lay on the floor under the car again, repeating the job!

Just a thought, at one time you could buy a balance plate that bolted between the crankshaft and the flywheel. This allowed the use of a neutral balance flywheel on a 454. I havent seen one in a long time but they may still be available.

You can see the weight on it. The flexplates have a similar weight welded onto them.
