1998 Silverado 4x4 Truetrac addition?

My truck is in for paint but in the little Ive driven it in snow, I need a rear posi. Shes a little light in the loafers with no extra weight.

What involved cost and otherwise in adding a Truetrac?

They didn't come with a factory equipped "posi" but a locking diff. Which is better than a posi as when they lock, they will actually spin the tire on the high traction surface versus when the other is on snow or ice. The other bonus, it is only activated when 1 tire spins 100rpm faster than the other UNDER 20mph. But that is just my opinion with the experience I have with both.

On the downside, you can break them when you treat them like a race car. I have seen the actual case split in half when the govenor or limiting disc/ramp doesn't fail as designed.

Did you check for R.P.O. G80 on the SPID label in the glove box?

It has no G80, it has a 3.42 ratio. Ive owned a couple of posis, never owned a Truetrac type. It wont be abused.

I did install a Truetrac this summer, just wanted to say what a big difference it made in 2wd and 4wd, even with no extra weight in the box.

 i had a 96 blazer with G80 and a 95 Sonoma with out. the Blazer did great in 2wd but the Sonoma was useless, needed to be in 4wd

Personally I wouldn't pay money for any of those governor style diffs that engage when one tire spins 100 rpm faster than the other. Over the years I've seen a number of them blown up including one I was driving, a 77 Blazer. Zero abuse, driving on the street in town and the governor came apart. Pieces of it pushed right through the diff cover, there was a trail of diff oil up to my parking spot.

I am suspecting that my trucks diffy has crapped the bed.

This winter (since snow only just arrived) it's acting 100% like a 'one-wheeler-peeler';
Mine is G80 + GT4 (3.73:1).
