1998 Chev k1500 ABS Issue

No abs light or other cel, brakes work fine when I stop hard to test them. But, at very low speeds such as when creeping along in traffic, the abs kicks in big time. I assume 1998 was early 4 wheel abs, is there any peculiarities? Would any contamination of the sensors be doing this? My 89 bonneville had this happen, it was a cracked wheel sensor iirc.

Thanks,

Don

Usually it's the gap between the sensor and tone ring being too big. You'd need to monitor each sensor to see which one is dropping out.

When I was working we had trouble on a couple with the symptom you describe. One of the front hubs was starting to fail and metal particles contaminated the abs sensor. There wasnt any looseness in the bearing or noise, just the abs acting up.

Agreed with Todd usually rust build up under the sensor pushing the sensor up and increasing the air gap. If you can remove the sensor from the hub (usually seized in the hub and breaks) you can sand down the rust and lube with light grease or silicone paste and reinstall will correct this issue. Remove the retaining bolt and generously spray with penetrating fluid and cautiously try to turn the sensor back and forth sideways (as in trying to rotate in a circle) sometimes you will get lucky and it will come out, then you can sand down the rust build up and lube and reinstall. I've found that a tire valve stem cap will fit in the hole to prevent all the crap from from falling in the hole while cleaning the hub housing surface. Hopefully that helps. Good Luck.

Thanks for all the detailed advice, this will give me something to dig into.

At slow speeds the abs sometimes activates without me touching the brake pedal. Have about 500 kms on it since getting it back together.

You'd be best to pull the ABS fuse in the meantime until you get it sorted. I remember guys with similar issues on newer trucks hitting their garage walls etc.

With a scan tool watch the wheel speed data and you will see one sensor drop to zero as youre coming to the stop. Thats when the ABS kicks in thinking that wheel is locked up skidding. You could try replacing that sensor but most likely replace the complete hub/bearing assembly. Common problem.

I forgot I had another obd scanner, a Blue Driver, I only used it on the vw and forgot I had it- probably due to old age?

It gave me a code c0222- rt front wheel speed missing; a c0223- rt front wheel speed erratic; and a c0281- issue with brake light switch. I'm thinking I'll check those 2 connectors, clean them, clear codes, and see what happens? The truck was quite dirty with some rust proofing and a lot of thick dust so maybe just bad connections?

Like previously mentioned the rust build under sensor will push sensor away from reluctor wheel and act as you describe.
mostly at slow speeds, but can do this at higher speeds if bad. Could have set right front code due to being unhooked.
But if you scanner can read data for abs you will see it drop out at low speed. There was a recall on the ABS sensors

for this condition. remove sensor in hub, clean and apply rust inhibitor and reinstall. did hundreds of them.
